Buchter News

The Buchter News was created in 1987 by volunteers of the Scottish gap-year organization Project Trust, as the local newspaper of Lüderitz. Starting off as a newsletter for the Benguela community it soon turned into a monthly newspaper.
Since November 2008 the newspaper is printed full-colour on A4 size. The newspaper currently has 16 pages. Since 2009 the Buchter News can be reached over the internet .
Copies
The Buchter News currently distributes roughly 1200 copies within the town of Lüderitz. An additional 35 copies are sent to South Africa, Mozambique, the Netherlands, United States of America, Iceland and the United Kingdom.
Buchter News projects
The volunteers running the Buchter News are also active as volunteers within the community. Currently the main project next to the Buchter News is the Valombola Kindergarten, a kindergarten in the poorest of all the Lüderitz locations, Area 7. The volunteers teach and fund raise money for the kindergarten. The Valombola Kindergarten used to go by the name "Valombola Créche", but this officially changed with the new constitution in November 2008. Next to the kindergarten volunteers teach at several other schools, run sports programs and keep on looking for new projects.
Recently a new project was launched: the Buchter Forum, an online forum for the community of Lüderitz to replace the long e-mail discussions.
