The British Icelandic Expedition 1989 was an attempt to cross the Vatnajökull on foot and in winter. It was conducted by a group of British explorers: John Hughes (expedition leader), Karl Hughes, Rock (then Nigel) Salt (base camp manager), Mick Jennings, Mick Williams, Dave Chalmers and Trevor Willis. An independent film crew unit (Cam3 Video) composed of Derek Latimer and Anne White accompanied the team. The team were successful and enjoyed celebrations in Reykjavik at the British Embassy. A great deal of interest surrounded the team both during the crossing and on their return to Reykjavik and the UK.
