Brigid Maher

Brigid Maher is a filmmaker and new media theorist who heads the New Media concentration in the Film and Media Arts Division in the School of Communication at American University. Her scholarly writing focuses on the interplay between traditional film and new media theories. Her award-winning narrative and documentary films have shown in festivals in the U.S. and abroad. Her latest documentary, Veiled Voices, focuses on the phenomenon of Muslim women religious leaders in Islam. Maher won a Fulbright Senior Award to teach broadcast media in Lebanon in the spring of 2005. She teaches digital media and editing courses for SOC. She also worked as a video producer for the Center for Social Media at American University.

"AWOL (2005) The fictional short about an encounter between an army deserter and a desert family in Iraq. Distributed by Third World Newsreel (www.twn.org).
Stories Untold (2004) The eight-minute documentary outlines the critical issues that documentary filmmakers face when clearing copyrights to distribute their work. The project was produced by the Center for Social Media.
Aquanaut (2004) The ten-minute music video was produced for the Chicago band Buried at Sea.
The King, the Lawyers, and the Cheese (2003) The forty-five-minute documentary follows an underground artist’s legal fight against Kraft Foods to keep his nom de plume.
Adrift in the Heartland (2002) A feature film about a young Palestinian woman and African American woman who overcome their stereotypes to form a friendship through jazz and classic movies.
SAVE THE AFGHAN CHILDREN! (2001) The twelve-minute video presents a satirical view of the current U.S. foreign policy in Afghanistan. The video is based on a fictional telethon organized by a group of women influenced by President Bush’s speech to help the Afghan children during the New War.
Chicago Adrift (1998) A ten-minute film short about an impromptu confrontation between an African American woman and a Palestinian woman in Chicago.
Waiting (1997) The three-minute visual poem portrays a desperate young woman frozen with inaction.
Muslim Women Living in Oman (1995) The twenty-two minute video examines Western misconceptions and the status of Muslim women in Oman.
New Media Work
TONGUE TIES (2008) The installation explores Brigid’s discovery of her biological past through her son’s daily development.
The New “F” Word aka FEM·I·NISM (2007) Co-producer and co-Director with Leena Jaywaswal. New media installation. The installation explores the changing definition of feminism across generations and ethnic backgrounds.
Crossing Lines (2007). Title Graphics. Documentary produced and directed by Leena Jayaswal and Indira Somani about an Indian American woman who travels to India after her father’s death.
Deconstructing Katrina (2006). Co-producer and co-Director with Leena Jayaswal. New media installation. The five-panel video installation investigates the messages produced by mainstream media-makers during the disaster through examples from newspapers, magazines, television and the web.
