Brendan Van Alstine, is a registered social worker , activist and municipal politician from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. On July 23, 2009, Van Alstine announced his candidacy for Edmonton City Council in the newly created Ward 7 for the 2010 Edmonton Municipal Election. He is currently considered by some some political pundits to be the most likely to win in ward 7 and to defeat an incumbent councillor. Van Alstine received his Diploma in Social Work from Grant MacEwan College (now Grant MacEwan University) in 2005 and has since worked for a number of social service agencies, he currently works for the Pride Centre of Edmonton. Van Alstine is heavily involved in his community, he has worked with Edmonton's local LGBTQ community for since 2006 through his job as the Youth Program Coordinator at the Pride Centre of Edmonton. He is a board member for the Alberta Avenue Community League and is also a regular volunteer at the Carrot Community Arts Coffeehouse. Van Alstine was responsible, along with several other citizens, for founding the Transit Riders' Union of Edmonton in spring of 2007, which advocates for improved transit in Edmonton. He was also, until August 2009, one of the columnists responsible for the weekly 'In Transit' feature in Edmonton's Metro News. He describes himself as a staunch advocate of developing a more livable and sustainable city, including in-fill, more compact development and better urban design, as well as reducing car-dependence through improved transit and more pedestrian & cyclist-friendly communities.
