Black Turns Red is a local Christian pop/rock band from Elizabeth, New Jersey, formed in 2008 with three members and a rotating "guest" bass player. (They never officially had a bass player.) They played in different states including, New Jersey, Maryland, New York, and Pennsylvania. They also opened for bands like Run Kid Run, Unspoken, and Kronicles. Jackie DaSilva and Alex Nunes met at First Portuguese Speaking Baptist Church of NJ in Elizabeth, NJ and that is how he heard that DaSilva wrote songs. After listening to a few of her songs, he decided to help her out, with no intentions of starting a band. Nunes transformed DaSilva’s songs from acoustic songs into pop/rock songs. It was only when their church was looking for bands to perform at a local Summer Music Festival that Nunes decided to call his friend, Victor Landano, to play drums for them. After that festival in August 2008, the band Black Turns Red was formed. Black Turns Red has over 2,500 fans on Myspace and according to ReverbNation, Black Turns Red is ranked 127th on the local charts. Band history Black Turns Red released their self-titled E.P. on iTunes on October 20, 2008. DaSilva wrote all of the songs on the EP. Ladoano and Nunes wrote a couple of new songs that they performed but they never recorded those songs to sell. The song "Take Me Back" was written lyrically by Jai Brinkofski and musically by Nunes. "Take Me Back" was performed first at SummerFest 2009 when Black Turns Red opened for Unspoken in Elizabeth, NJ. Another song the band played and recorded but has yet to release is called "Higher", which can be heard and seen on Youtube. "Higher" was written by Landano. Nunes played the guitar on the E.P recording and most of the bass parts. He even played the drums, for some of the songs. (Ladoano played the drums for most of the songs.) The band opened for Run Kid Run in Maryland at the 730 Club. They also opened for Kronicles many times and in many states like in Pennsylvania and in New Jersey. Black Turns Red appeared in an Kean University article in January 2009. Discography * Self Titled E.P (2008) Influences Black Turns Red has been said to have "a rocky sound that gives the message of hope out to their variety of audience," notes the author of the Kean University article, Rachel Rothspan. The three members of Black Turns Red have a variety of musical interests. DaSilva, the lead signer and songwriter, enjoys music from John Mayer, Krystal Meyers, Relient K and other pop-rock bands. DaSilva also likes more acoustic songs than her band members do. Nunes, the guitarist, enjoys more Heavy Metal, Rock, and some pop-rock bands. While Landano, the drummer, enjoys bands like Paramore and music from any genre even Hip-hop and rap. All of the bands different interest in music has definitely made an impact in their music. The band's music focuses on themes of love, hope, and a relationship with God. For example, the song "Take A Hold" is a plea for God to finally take a hold of one's life. DaSilva pleads with God, asking Him to "Change me, change everything that I will be. Change my ways, change everything that I will say." Another song called "Traces of Denial" is about how DaSilva believes she is "far from holy" yet God chooses to love her anyway. All of the band's lyrics and songs are about the struggle and confusion behind believing in God but still having a strong relationship with Him through it all. Members * Alex Nunes - Guitar and backup vocals * Jackie DaSilva (Almeida) - vocals * Victor Ladoano - drums * Guest bass player: Rodrigo Persike and Ricardo Oliveira Name History Black Turns Red is a metaphor for sins being forgiven through Christ. Black stands for Sin/Evil and Red for Christ. So it basically means Sin Turns to Christ.
