Black atheists

Black atheists is a term used to describe atheism among individuals of African descent, especially in the United States. Many Black atheists also identify as freethinkers, humanists, and non-theists. Due to the highly religious nature of African American communities (According to the Pew Research Center, 85% of African Americans claim religious affiliation) in the U.S., African American atheists are statistically small in number, but have established a more visible online presence over the past several years. In May 2010, the Washington D.C. Center for Inquiry hosted the first ever African Americans for Humanism conference, which gathered the largest group of black freethinkers, atheists, and humanists in recent history. Organizations that represent Black atheist views and community concerns include African Americans for Humanism, Black Atheists of America and the Black Skeptics of Los Angeles.
