Biblical counseling

Biblical counseling (also known as nouthetic counseling from the Greek word noutheteo ("to admonish or warn.") is a form of Christian counseling that aims to use devotional instructions in the Bible to treat psychological problems. It treats psychological problems as spiritual problems, which it teaches can be solved by devotion to Christ. Nouthetic counseling consists of lovingly confronting people out of deep concern in order to help them make those changes that God requires.
It was developed by Jay E. Adams, and published in his 1970 book, Competent to Counsel.
Eric Johnson points out that that biblical counseling has tended to be "very skeptical of contemporary psychology" and "the efforts of integrationist Christians who seek to combine their faith with that psychology."
Nouthetic counseling has been criticised for the way its "rational and certain approach can come across as impersonal, emotionally distant and insensitive."
