Benjamin Cass

Benjamin Cass (born 21 October 1977) is an Australian property developer and former Australian Labor Party, official. He received public attention in 2005 as part of a controversial $46 million property deal with the University of Melbourne and former business partner, Andrew Landeryou.
Early life
Cass grew up in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, attending Caulfield Grammar School before being accepted into Monash University. He transferred to the University of Melbourne to study a bachelor’s degree in Public Policy & Management. In 2000, Cass was elected President of the Melbourne University Student Union formed in 1884, served on the University of Melbourne’s governing Council and was elected President of the Youth Policy Committee
Professional career
In 2005 Cass became the subject of an $8 million lawsuit brought by Dean Royston McVeigh, company administrator, following a $46 million property deal that Cass was a beneficiary of alleged to have triggered the liquidation of the Melbourne University Student Union in 2004.
The lawsuit was withdrawn against Cass after a set of court losses against the liquidator of the student union, Dean Royston McVeigh, and his legal team led by Gary T Bigmore QC and Graeme Levy of Madgwicks Lawyers despite spending $6 million in professional fees against the self-represented Cass. Cass' win was described as "heroic" by the political website Vexnews and a "remarkable victory" by The Age newspaper.
Most notably, McVeigh failed in his attempt in the Supreme Court of Victoria to silence Cass’ criticism of the liquidation via an online blog after Justice Elizabeth Hollingworth determined Cass’ statements to “have a strong degree of factual accuracy”, particularly concerning the uncommerciality of the liquidator’s actions and his false claims against Cass.
Cass was a company director of the Arlington Group, a property and development consultancy and HBO+EMTB, Asia-Pacific's 3rd largest design firm.
In 2013, Cass signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Jaya Property, a listed developer on the Indonesian Stock Exchange, on behalf of Living Well Communities for the joint development of seniors' communities in Indonesia. Jaya Property was rated by Forbes as "one of the best of the best" performing companies with cash and assets of $4.9 billion.
Public Service
In 2013, Cass was appointed to the Board of the Australia-Indonesia Business Council (Victoria). He has been an active proponent of fostering greater bi-lateral trade between Australia and Indonesia and speaking engagements have included the ASEAN Foundation and the Australian government's Austrade.
