Bearcast is the University of Cincinnati's student internet radio station. All DJs and directors of the station are students. The station's name is a word play on the University's mascot, the bearcat.
Programming Bearcast airs a combination of "format shows," featuring music from College Music Journal Top 200 charts selected by the Music Director, and "specialty shows" of every genre. There are also sports talk shows, live play-by-play of UC athletics, and other programming which varies from quarter to quarter.
Bearcast broadcasts 24 hours a day from the Jack and Joan Strader Studio in Mary Emery Hall. DJs are live in the studio from 10 AM to 2 AM daily. Most shows are two hours in length. Overnight hours feature pre-programmed content.
Organization structure Bearcast is a student organization, and part of the Electronic Media Division of the College-Conservatory of Music.[BearcastAbout /> All DJs and directors, including the general manager, are students.][BearcastFAQ />]
Directors are responsible for all station operations. Each department has a director, who reports to the general manager. A faculty advisor oversees the station. New directors are interviewed and chosen by a committee, which usually consists of the faculty advisor, a local media industry professional, and current directors or DJs that will be graduating.
All UC students can join the organization and become a DJ. All new DJs must host a format show during their first quarter on the air. Returning DJs may apply to host a specialty show. Specialty shows are granted based on the show concept, and the abilities and experience of the DJ.
History CCM began offering a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Radio Broadcasting in 1946. This became part of the Division of Broadcasting in the 1970s, and finally the Electronic Media Division in 1990. Bearcast began in the Autumn Quarter of 1999, when Assistant Professor Dr. John Owens began to plan and develop the station. The station finally launched on November 26 2000.
The station's website was located at Bearcast.uc.edu until July 1 2008, when it moved to BearcastRadio.com.
