Bear Witch (folklore)
----
The legend of The Bear Witch is a scary story told from generation to generation in the small town of Haviland, Kansas. While the back story of the legend is mainly believed as true by all in the town, the rumors of a haunting that occurs from the events is hotly debated.
Bear Witch is alleged to be a ghost-like creature resembling a brown bear inhabiting a small abandoned house in the middle of no where in the town of Haviland. The scientific community considers the Bear Witch legend to be a combination of folklore, misidentified animals, and hoaxes. Despite its dubious status, Bear Witch has become a popular symbol in Haviland. A local bible college, Barclay college, even took the bear as its mascot because of this legend.
----
Story
---- Haviland was founded by a group of Quakers and named after Laura Haviland, a leader of the Underground Railroad. Soon after its rough beginnings, some weird things started happening in the town.
After a what seemed to be one of the toughest winters on record, many of the residents livestock started acting funny. Cows started trying to run away despite barbed wire fences ending up in bad cuts. Chickens and roosters began to peck at each other for no apparant reason. Many in the town started losing animals to no fault of their own. Nobody had any explination for the behavior.
Then in the summer of 1806, the summer following the weird animal behavior, a small traveling circus came through the town. The circus' pride and joy was a trained bear they had named Maria. The animals of the circus started to put on their show and halfway through started acting crazy just as the animals of the local people. The ring leader could not explain or control the animals behavior. Maria got loose and started killing many in the audience. The townspeople ran to their homes screaming in fear. The bear went on a spree killing 13 people before a local farmed was able to get a shotgun and put the bear down in the middle of a corn field.
No weird animal behavior has been reported since that night.
The Legend
---- Citizens of the town have reported strange activity near the field where Maria the bear was shot and killed. A house was built on that property some years later and the owners constantly called the sheriff reporting bear sightings even though there are no bears near Haviland for hundreds of miles. Local kids will tell you that if you try and stay the night in the house or out in that field you are guaranteed to see a misty figure that resembles what they claim to be Maria the bear. Some say the bear will attack you and leave you for dead just like she did the 13 people on that summer night but this story is a little more hard to come by.
