Beacon (video game)

Beacon is an experimental video game created by indie software developer Ruari O'Sullivan. It was released on February 15th, 2011 for Windows as a free download from the creator's website. A Mac version was released a few days after. The game sees players assume the role of an unidentified astronaut stranded on a distant planet after having been shot down after tracing a beacon and orbiting the unknown planet. The game was featured on Rock Paper Shotgun and was noted for its "happy platforming" and "touching ending".
Gameplay
The game is a short, minimalist platforming game in which players explore the planet by navigating their astronaut through the hazardous, radiated environment by jumping and utilising a limited jetpack boost across caverns, chasms, lava pools and other dangers. Players soon discover ancient alien structures and technology on the planet and push deeper into its caves, and start unravelling its mysteries before the conclusion.
Development
Developer Ruari O'Sullivan left his role as a paid developer at a UK games studio in November 2009 to pursue independent games development and started blogging his progress on his personal website. Beacon is his first game release, with an unannounced collaborative game project currently in the works.
