Battle for Dream Island

Battle for Dream Island, often shortened to just BFDI, is an animated web series. The show involves anthropomorphized objects (such as household objects) interacting in an environment reminiscent of reality TV. The show involves viewer participation; after an episode, viewers are asked to vote on a contestant that, in most seasons, would be eliminated in the following episode. Battle for Dream Island is widely regarded as having pioneered a new genre called an "object show", most of which followed a similar setting to BFDI.
BFDI first premiered on January 1st, 2010 on the YouTube account Jacknjellify, and was created by twin brothers Cary and Michael Huang. There are a total of 25 episodes in the first season, which encompasses the first elimination game and concludes with a “last-man-standing” finale. Several seasons have been produced to continue the show.
BFDI has attained the status of subculture on Know Your Meme. BFDI's first book, Battle for Dream Island: Official Character Guide, was published on August 29th, 2019 by Scholastic. In 2016, BFDI's fictional food Yoylecake won Wikia's (now known as Fandom) 4th Annual Battle of the Fantasy Foods, which caused it to be served as real-life versions by Wikia at New York Comic Con 2016. In 2021, BFDI won the independent Cartoon Crave Awards.
Overview
Five seasons of BFDI have existed, all following a similar format. Inspired by elimination-style competitions such as Survivor (one of the more direct influences being the animated depiction of this format Total Drama), each season consists of a number of anthropomorphic objects competing in challenges for a prize. Each episode, a number of contestants are put up for elimination, and the viewers use the comment section of the respective video to vote who they would like to eliminate or who they would like to save from elimination, depending on the elimination format which is stated in the episode.
The first season, Battle for Dream Island (BFDI) consists of twenty (later twenty-one) objects competing for the titular Dream Island hosted by the Announcer (depicted as a grey speaker box), with the winner being Firey. The second season, Battle for Dream Island Again (BFDIA) consists of 22 contestants, battling for a prize that would remain ambiguous and unnamed, with the host also being ambiguous as several different methods of hosting were used throughout the season. This season was officially canceled after the fifth episode. The third season, known as IDFB (presumed to be an acronym for BFDI's name backwards and was jokingly referred to by Jacknjellify as It's Deep Fried Breaths as a reference to an event in the episode), only consisted of one episode before an indefinite hiatus and had no stated host, number of contestants, or prize. The fourth season, Battle For BFDI, later Battle for BFB, consisted of 64 contestants. This season had a prize of “A BFDI” (depicted as a square resembling a shot of the first season's cast as a Deep-fried meme). This season had several hosts and co-hosts, the main two being Four and X but has also featured Donut, the Announcer, and Purple Face as hosts and/or co-hosts.16 episodes into the season, the show's cast 'split' resulting in only 14 contestants left in the season, the name change, and a secondary prize called A BFB (Similar to A BFDI but with the original cast of BFB instead) being added, with the winner of this season being Flower. The fifth season, Battle For Dream Island: The Power Of Two (BFDI:TPOT), consists of a cast of 42 contestants (the 40 remaining after BFB's split and two debuting contestants) competing for the powers the host (Two) possesses. This season is currently ongoing.
Each episode follows a similar format. Episodes normally begin with a cold open, leading into Cake At Stake, where the voting results are shared, and "cake" (not necessarily a cake or even a confection) is given to the contestants who are safe, and the contestant or contestants who are not safe are left without cake. The episode's challenge is then announced, and the contestants perform the challenge, and the team or number of contestants who do not meet the conditions for completing the challenge are put up for elimination and are voted on by the voters. Certain episodes deviate from this format such as the first and final episode(s) of a season. Seasons consist of the cast being put into teams, and once enough contestants are eliminated, the cast merges and competes for individual immunity.
Cake at Stake
Cake at Stake is the elimination process for Battle for Dream Island. The team or group of contestants who lost would be put up for "elimination". Viewers are able to vote on who they wish to be eliminated, or in recent series, "saved".
Safe contestants received a prize; usually this would be a cake, but in some episodes, other, more nonsensical prizes were given out, ranging from knives to fortune cookies. Though viewers were usually able to vote, sometimes voting was performed by the contestants.
Recommended characters
Starting in Season 1, Episode 10, fans have been able to "recommend" characters. These recommended characters would later make cameos in the series, usually as background characters. Originally, their were no restrictions on creating characters, however, starting in Season 1, Episode 18 (Reveal Novum), only one recommended character was allowed per recommender, and as of Season 1, episode 23 (Hurtful!), no copyrighted characters were allowed to avoid lawsuits.
In Season 1, Episode 17 (The Reveal), thirty handpicked recommended characters were chosen to be part of a special voting period, with the most voted character joining the competition. The winner of the voting, a grey stick figure with the name "David", became the twenty-first contestant in the first season.
Re-uploaded episodes
Two episodes of BFDI have had to be re-uploaded due to fatal errors in the originals. The first was Episode 12 (A Leg Up In The Race). In the original, Golf Ball and Rocky were shown on the Another Name team. However, in the previous episode (Lofty), Golf Ball got eliminated and Rocky got moved to The Squishy Cherries, and neither of them should have been with Another Name. As a result, the episode was taken down, and a new version was uploaded, with the error fixed.
The second was Episode 20 (Gardening Hero). This episode was originally missing a 30-second portion that contained elimination/rejoin details and the recommended characters for that episode. The episode was later re-uploaded with that part of the episode included.
Total Firey Points
Total Firey Points was the unreleased hand-drawn comic series/prototype version of Battle for Dream Island. The original seasons were to be called Firey, Total Firey Island, Total Firey Points, and Total Firey Switch. The main character (and possibly host) of the series was Firey. Character personalities were also slightly different. The team names were "Murder Trouts" and "Yelling Beavers", parodying the team names from Total Drama Island.
Rewards
Usually, the winning team/contestant(s) get immunity as a reward for beating a challenge, but other times the reward is an eliminated competitor/rival teammate being added/moved to the winning team. Before the merge, contestants could also win so-called Win Tokens. If a contestant is up for elimination, they could use their Win Token to erase half of their votes, helping them stay safe during eliminations. Other rewards (BFDI posters, BFDI DDSs, teddy bears, etc.) were also given out prior to reaching a new stage in the competition.
Seasons
There have been, in total, five seasons of BFDI. All five seasons have unique names.
Battle for Dream Island Again
Battle for Dream Island Again, commonly abbreviated as BFDIA is the second season of Battle for Dream Island. It consists of 20 contestants, with some being new recommended characters, and some being ones from season 1. This was decided via a voting video on February 10, 2012 where voters voted for which contestants should join the second season and who shouldn’t. BFDIA consists of 5 episodes, with Episode 5 being split into 5 parts, part 2 (5b) in particular being a game. Episode 6 was supposed to be uploaded on September 1 2013, but it was never fully finished, due to the creators losing their Adsense account.
IDFB
Island Dream For Battle, abbreviated as IDFB is the third season of Battle For Dream Island. This season focuses on the life of the objects in Yoyle City, going away from the standard competition format the show was previously known for. Every episode, viewers can choose to bring one character back to the show each episode.
BFB
Battle for BFDI, abbreviated as BFB, is the fourth season of Battle For Dream Island, spanning 30 episodes, which premiered on November 4th 2017.
In this season 64 characters competed on 8 teams. New hosts Four and X were introduced.
In the 16th episode, a new character, Two, appeared and offered the contestant a chance to battle for "The Power Of Two". 40 of the characters decided to abandon BFB and switch to Two's competition, thus splitting the cast into two different seasons.
The show was renamed to Battle for BFB (Battle for Battle for Battle for Dream Island) starting with episode 17.
The final episode of BFB was released on April 9th, 2021.
The Power of Two
Battle for Dream Island: The Power Of Two, abbreviated as BFDI:TPOT or just TPOT, is the fifth season of BFDI. Its first and so far only episode premiered on January 10th, 2021. This season is hosted by Two and introduces two new contestants which were chosen by the viewers, Winner and Price Tag.
Soundtrack
The soundtracks for BFDI, BFDIA and IDFB consist of mostly royalty-free works in the Creative Commons. Particularly, the songs used in the first season of Battle for Dream Island were made by Kevin MacLeod. In BFB, the music was primarily composed by Michael Huang, one of the makers of Battle For Dream Island.
