BankerBay is a deal origination platform that matches middle-market corporates seeking capital with relevant capital providers anywhere in the world, with the use of complex algorithms. The platform also helps members raise capital as well as buy and sell companies along with locating potential investments and new clients for businesses. BankerBay provides transactions in private equity, M&A, real estate and project finance. The platform mostly facilitates middle market deals, ranging in value between USD 10 and USD 200 million. Background Romesh Jayawickrama founded BankerBay in 2013, and within a year of its inception, the platform had attracted more than USD 15 billion of institutional quality deals and had a member base of 6,800. What led Romesh to start BankerBay? In his own words, he was frustrated with the inefficient business models of large banks, and the disadvantages faced because of lack of information. He wanted to change this model; come up with a process that would reduce human intervention and also gather effective information so that deals could be closed faster. Funding In 2016, BankerBay had seen monthly deal flows increase from USD 75 million to USD 10 billion. During the same year, BankerBay reported that it had raised USD 2 million in a convertible funding round. Prior to that, in June 2015, BankerBay closed a USD 2.1 million seed funding round from David Toh, director at NTUitive, other senior investment bankers in corporate finance, M&A and private equity, senior technology sector specialists and Scale.VC, a Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm. BankerBay is also backed by a sovereign agency. BankerBay has facilitated the following deals * BankerBay matched a real estate developing company, who was focused on hospitality, with a capital provider who provided an amount of USD 40 million. The company was able to purchase a mixed-use development (a type of urban development) in the U.S. with the help of that amount. * This platform helped a Western European food & beverage company, which wanted to enter the seafood industry, by matching them with a relevant capital provider. The company was funded with a capital of USD 50 million and hence was able to enter the seafood industry. * It also matched a Turkish textiles manufacturer company with a willing capital provider. This enabled the company to acquire the required target of USD 50 million. Website The BankerBay website has attracted users from different countries because it finds relevant matches for corporates and capital providers. It also has a team of Transaction Management Analysts to verify and validate the deals. Every deal that is submitted to the platform undergoes a strict verification process and is accepted only after it meets institutional quality standards. The website maintains the privacy of the members by keeping their identities anonymous until the introduction. The website has a very strict privacy policy which enables each and every user to have total control over the viewership of their profile. It also has a proprietary technology which is used extensively while running and culling through potential deals for investors. Complex algorithms have been developed for the website to display matches for each and every user, which saves a significant amount of time and effort for them. The website’s interface asks about the user’s preference, after which it updates the potential matches accordingly.
