Avonair Curling Club

The Avonair Curling Club is a 47 year old curling club located in Edmonton, Alberta. It houses 8 sheets of ice along with changing areas, a concession and a large bar/lounge upstairs. It Is open from late September to late April. There are about 25 leagues each year.
<code>History</code>:
The Avonair Curling Club was originally created by the Edmonton-Avenue Curling Club. The Edmonton Curling Club was located at the north end of the High Level Bridge and the Alberta Curling Club was at 9430 - 117 Avenue. Both facilities were aging and curlers were looking for a new building. In 1969, members from the Edmonton and Avenue Curling Clubs came together and purchased the Avonair Curling Club. However, the original name when bought was the Menorah Curling Club which was built by the Jewish Community in 1952. The first season of Curling was 1970/1971.
<code>Financial Problem</code>:
In 1987, something had to be done in order to maintain the financial viability of the club. On October 1, 1987 the Avonair Curling Association of Edmonton was formed and registered under the Societies Act which made them able to apply for grants and different types of financial assistance. This association still operates the club under a lease agreement with the Edmonton-Avenue Curling Club.
<code>Changes</code>:
The new funding sources allowed the club to upgrade the 35 year old building. A new chiller and condenser were purchased; new brine lines and concrete base in the ice area were installed; and roof renovations were completed. In 1992 the entire front of the building was rebuilt to enlarge the viewing area, creating the modern facility the members enjoy to date. In the Summer of 2015, renovations were done on the exterior facing NAIT. Sometime in the future, the roof will have to be replaced.
<code>Leagues</code>:
The Avonair Curling Club has about 25 leagues a year that cater to all ages and skill levels. Room is usually available to play in a league, but do contact to be sure. Two leagues that are noted for their Longevity are the Ladies Hot Shots (Tuesday evening ladies league) and the Sportsmen (Wednesday afternoon men's league). There is also a Men and Women NAIT team.
