The Australian Consulate General in Chennai represents the interests of the Australian government in the southern region of India. The other missions in India are the Australian High Commission in New Delhi and the Australian Consulate General in Mumbai. The current Consul General of the Chennai consulate is Sean Kelly, incumbent since January 2014. He was preceded by David Holly. History The Australian Government has had a presence in Chennai since 1995. The decision of opening a Consulate General in South India was announced in March 2006, when the then Australian prime minister, John Howard, visited the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. On 26 February 2007, the mission was upgraded to Consulate General when the Australian Minister for Trade, Warren Truss, opened a new office for the Australian Consulate General in the city. Austrade's Trade Commissioner to Chennai, Aminur Rahman, became the first Consul General of the expanded mission. The Consulate General is located at Express Avenue Estate, Whites Road, Royapettah. List of consul generals Upon expansion as a Consulate General in January 2007, the mission has been headed by consul generals. Below is the list of consul generals of the Australian Consulate General in Chennai: ;Consul generals # Aminur Rahman (January 2007-September 2010) # David Holly (October 2010-January 2014) # Sean Kelly (January 2014-Present) Functions The Australian Consulate General in Chennai administrates the southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and the union territories of Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Puducherry. The Consulate General was established to enhance the delivery of services to South India from Australian Government agencies including Austrade. The consulate also has under its control trade offices at Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Kochi.
