THE WORD ASUDEM ASUDEM is a word coined and used by Daryush Shokof for an art piece by himself in 1990,at Gallery Schulze in Cologne , Germany.The art work is a balance with two heads hanging from each side of the balance. one side is the head of the famous MEDUSA, and on the other side one sees the Head of a snake in fear of its life from poiseous human beings (Shokof called this side ASUDEM)meaning that it is not the snake that dizzies man,s mind, but the mankind has become so viscious that it scares the snake in fear of itslife. CINEMATOGRAPHY CONCEPT Shokof wrote (in collaboration with Juliane Schulze) a script based upon this art work and thereafter made the movie Asudem based upon his film script in Berlin, Germany in 2007. the film is a stunning visual feast as Shokof uses only one source of light (Original Cinema light)throughout the whole film and lets the lead actress of the film (brilliantly played by Yangzom Brauen) guide and light the scenes (most masterfully) with that one light source in her hands. the results are revolutionary and in black and white.the cinematography of this film made ways for the cameraman Daryoush Zandi to be considered as a serious film cameraman and enter the film industry as a cinematographer.Shokof has since used Zandi,s collaboration as his favorite camera man on his films. STORY A lonely woman and her dog live somewhere in the woods on this planet which is often and usual of all Shokof films in such regards that one never knows where the film takes place. there is a war going on nearby and simultaneously which we never see, but only hear the sounds of bombings, and jet fighters flying above the warehouse-like space she lives in.many terrible things happen to the woman this day, and as the levels of disasters gradually grow, finally Satan appears in person to wrap up the day,s finale himself and in pursuit of bringing the woman under his evil influence.He finally drags her out into the woods for the kill, and she helplessly follows him into the cold winter outside.Frustrated and broken, she comes to the idea of faking hunger and ask Satan a time to rest and eat some wild mushrooms in the forrest.This is her last hope to insist Satan would eat the mushrooms as well. She knows the mushrooms are hallucinative and wishes that they could have Heavenly effects on Satan,which could in turn drive him mad and thus she could eventually escape his hands. Satan complies with her wishes and eats the mushrooms handful ,repeatedly and in a joy, and soon begins to have Heavenly visions. The visions of people dancing to peaceful music, and all the scenes seen in COLOR now and in contrast to the rest of the film which is in black and white turns the events around as she manages to escape, and run back to her HUT into the DEEP Dark perspectives of the night.
