Archibald Scott Kanon

Archibald Scott Kanon (1878-1915) was an American ragtime composer and pianist. He died in Silver City, New Mexico.
Youth
It is not known where Archibald Scott Kanon was born. His father (born Gagnon) came from Quebec, Canada, and was a dabbler (business, painting...) who changed his name to Kanon or Canon. Archibald started playing the piano at the age of 6 with a local professor in Louisiana, but was mainly self-taught. His mother died at his birth. He lived with his father, travelling from town to town in the south of USA and practising on a piano built specially for him. His father died in a duel when Archibald was 15.
A decisive encounter
From 15, he played in brothels and churches in the southern United States. At the age of 20, he met composer Mike Bernard and took lessons with him to complete his autodidact formation. Mike barnard encouraged him to publish his work.
History
He published his first work, "The great mountain rag" in 1901 in New York at the age of 23. He gave several performances while in New York. In 1903, due to many financial problems, he returned to Louisiana, where he had a child.
He finally settled in New Mexico, and died of Syphilis in Silver City.
Compositions
Archibald Scott Kanon composed 25 ragtime tunes. The most famous is "The great mountain rag" known as "Terra Verde Ragtime".
