Anthony Francis McCloskey (born October 13th, 1978) is an American sailor, and decorated war veteran.
Background and education
McCloskey was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and raised by his single mother, Dorothy McCloskey. His mother was uneducated and cleaned homes for a living. He was raised poor, in a low-income section of Philadelphia. He attended Central High School of Philadelphia and graduated in 1997, joining the U.S. Navy immediately after.
While serving in the Navy, McCloskey attended several Universities including St. Leo's, Central Texas College, Drexel University, Temple University, DeVry (Online), and American Military University. His academic studies have focused primarily on the field of Information Security.
Military Background
Anthony F. McCloskey is a Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy, a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom as well as Operation Enduring Freedom. He has been awarded the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in combat in Afghanistan. He served as a part of the first Joint Army / Navy Civil Affairs teams that operated in Afghanistan from 2005 - 2007, and helped in the creation of the Navy's new Maritime Civil Affairs Squadrons.
Additionally, McCloskey has served in various capacities on several of the U.S. Navy's "Visitation, Boarding, Search & Seizure" (VBSS) Teams. As a VBSS Team member he has conducted more than 350 vessel boarding in international and foreign waters around the globe.
Of note is the fact that in 2006, the Commanding General of 10th Mountain Division, General Benjamin Freakly wanted to award McCloskey the Bronze Star for brave conduct in battle, but McCloskey refused the award citing the fact that he felt he had not earned it.
Creative Works
Anthony McCloskey has been published in the New York Times, having written an on-going Op-Ed piece for them while deployed to Afghanistan . Additionally multiple posts from McCloskey's warblog ("ArmySailor.com") were selected by Gary Trudeau to be used in his book "War in the Sandbox".
Private Life
McCloskey currently lives in Jacksonville Florida, where he is stationed aboard a U.S. Navy ship. Although he keeps to himself mostly, he is an active member of the First Coast Free-thought Society, the World Affairs Council of Jacksonville, and several charitable organizations.
Additionally, McCloskey owns and operates his own consulting business, operating under the name "TadpoleNet".
