Annie Loyd

Annie Loyd is an independent candidate for the United States House of Representatives in Arizona's 3rd Congressional District. According to her website, annieloydforcongress.com, she is running on a platform of transpartisan politics. The Arizona Republic ran a series in February on the candidates for the Congressional seat and painted Loyd as working towards moderate goals if elected. The Republican incumbent John Shadegg who announced he was stepping down from the election was cited in the February 11th Media Advisory on the Annie Loyd for Congress website as an opportunity for the District to elect the first female independent to the House of Representatives. However with the urging of his party members Mr. Shadegg has re-entered the race. Ms. Loyd will also face the Democratic challenger to the seat Bob Lord.

The race was covered in the East Valley Tribune and showed a 27% independent voter population and noted increased registration of independents. With a district of 600,000 people cutting across urban Phoenix into rural parts of northern Maricopa county, the election is a proving ground for the independent campaign. Ms. Loyd was invited to Columbia University on February 4th, 2006 and was covered in the Columbia Spectator article by Maggie Astor titled, "Independent Calls for End to Bipartisan Politics."

The Federal Elections Commission notes that as of December 31, the Annie Loyd campaign had $8,000 on hand out of some $26,000 raised. With no party contributions this pales in comparison to the other competitors in the race. John Shadegg shows on the FEC page to have raised over $1,000,000 raised and Bob Lord over $600,000. Loyd is placed well above other third party candidates on opensecrets.org that shows Steve May and Edwin Winkler with $0. Herb Pain the previous Democratic Challenger to Shadegg on Congresspedia has endorsed Loyd publicly.

Born in South Dakota and raised as a community activist, Loyd moved to Los Angeles to run an 82 bed residential youth facility and organized peaceful protests of the residential facility in response to the Rodney King incident. Also according to her campaign website, Annie Loyd has lived in Phoenix for 15 years where she has among other endeavors founded the online publication "One Planet Magazine." The Annie Loyd Campaign website cites over 20 years of political consulting, social activism and work as a partner in a construction firm as part of her involvement with the community.
