Early life and education Angela Barnes, born in Rossendale, Lancashire, began playing horn at the age of eight. After studying with her mother for a couple of years, she started school at Chetham's School of Music, Manchester, studying with Lizzie Davis. She was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, the Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra and the European Union Youth Orchestra. Awards In 2002, Barnes won the Liverpool Young Musician competition. That same year, she won the Brass section of BBC Young Musician of the Year and was one of four finalists for the competition. Career While still a student, at the age of 21, Barnes was appointed second horn of the London Symphony Orchestra, the position she holds today. She was the first female member of the orchestra’s brass section. Throughout her career, she has also worked with most of the major British orchestras, including appearing as guest principal with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. As a soloist, Barnes has appeared with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic, and the Basingstoke Symphony Orchestra. Barnes can be heard on a number of recordings including Cala Records' second installment in the London Horn Sound series, Give it One, and Guildhall Horn Soloists with the Guildhall Horn Ensemble. She has also recorded Benjamin Britten’s Canticle for Tenor, Horn and Piano with tenor Allan Clayton, as part of the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme.
