Ancistrus Therapy

General
Ancistrus Therapy is a form of cosmetic treatment or prophylaxis. It is based on the application of Ancistrus Fish on different parts of the human body.
This treament enables rapid cleaning of porosities and according to recent studies may help sustain good skin condition. While Ancistrus is mainly known for its role as an aquarium fish, in many countries it is part of cosmetic and healthcare treatment.
History
Ancistrus Therapy goes a long way back into ancient history. According to Ancient Greece researchers, the Greeks performed what is called "Fish Healing" applying
fish onto surfaces of wounds of their warriors. In Boratus' book "Wars of Greece and Celts" one may find the quote: "He who was injured by sword or spear wounds not deep,
fish be applied on his skin by gentle women. Be his wounds clean and survive he will for fight he must for his people". Clearly this form of treatment was passed on to the Romans as well. Some evidence, although not very percise, claim that such procedures were even part of Native Americans healers practice.
Modern Applications
Ancistrus Therapy is widespread and yet not well known. It is performed differently in various parts of the world. In Thailand, these fish are applied on soles of the feet
and on fingernails as a common treatment for dry soles and fungus. In the US, however, emphasys is made specifically on women after childbirth. Several US studies have shown
in recent years that application of Ancistrus fish on female nipples improves the ability to lactate as well as the overall skin condition.
Controversy
Many animal rights organizations, as well as green movements, argue that the benefits of the treatment do not justify, what they claim to be, cruelty towards animals.
Germany was the first country to include this treatment into its healthcare program. However, several German cities were also the first to ban use of fish for
cosmetic purposes. The mayors of Stuttgart and Munich issued ordinances denying beauty salons and healthcare centers the right to offer the Ancistrus Therapy.
