AmritNath

SHRI AMRITNATH JI MAHARAJ

In the medieval period, rulers and authors treated the Yoga as a difficult philosophy and presented it to the common man in extremely difficult way. This attitude did a lot of harm to the society and life. The result was that the people, who were adherent to the path, became extinct. An environment of fear and doubt was created to distract us from our valuable trust and inheritance. The common people thought it that the Yoga was not practicable, especially for a householder. They got disinterested from Yoga, rather detested it. This was the misfortune of the people and the country.

The holy sage carried out an intense research in the Yogic way.
He experimented with the techniques. Performed severe austerity and penance; he drew inferences out of the entire process and distributed the knowledge to the people; it is hoped that the endeavor will help the restoration and resuscitation of the lost knowledge. The contribution of the Holy sage toward this program will go a long way in the annals of spiritual history of this country to revive the yogic knowledge and its pursuance from oblivion.

The yogic world was infested largely and extensively with rodents and thorny bushes. The Holy Sage cleared the forest and introduced the Sahaja Yoga, the straight, practical and easy way for all and sundry. The inquisitive lot can do immense good to themselves with the help of Sahaja Yoga.
But according to the Holy Sage, Revered Sri AmritNathji Maharaj, no method will bring success or bear fruit till the food culture is rectified and modified in accordance with his teachings. This is without doubt.
He says -- "Sudhare ahara-vihara, vega man ka thame".

The power of mind comes under control when the aspiring practitioner rectifies his food culture. With its frivolity brought under check, its infatuation for the transient worldly pleasures diminishes; only then the sense of equanimity and forgiveness will gain ground in intellect. Association with the true sages becomes possible; only then he can deserve the bestowal of the teachings, the commands and the favor of the preceptor. With this accomplished, the outgoing tendencies and instinctual inclinations will be purified and will be in drawn. Only then, the path of spiritual weal will open up. After all this is achieved, the aspiring practitioner will find himself anchored in the unmixed happiness of the self i.e. atmanand.
The experiences regarding the food culture and life- style, tried and experimented with by the Holy Sage, have been revealed to the people for the first time. So far no one has brought out such views onto the public; this is the very special gift of the liberated holy soul.
About celibacy he has said,
jisaka virya akhanda hai, ardha-mukta hai soya.
He is half liberated, who is a perfect celibate. We have forgotten how great the importance of the strict observance of celibacy is & we have gone down the basal vile abyss of animal sensuality We never look to the aphorism -- Maranam biñdu patenat jivanam bindu dharanat
It means, life depends upon shedding a drop or retaining it. We behave just opposite - no trace of or no iota of the restraint i.e. samyam is seen in our lives.
There is no worth without maturity, abundance and preservation of the drop of the semen. Without it, there is no intelligence, no power, no capability, no balance, no thought, no firmness, no courage, no kindheartedness, no contentment, no love for solitude, no austerity penance, and finally no illumination. Only darkness, infatuation, craving, lust, impotency, irritability and negative qualities are the gifts of blinding ignorance. This is the reason of sorrow, misery and unrest in the world.
The Holy sage says,
”The town i.e. the human body, is illumined by the semen. There is no light of knowledge in the absence of semen in abundance, no way out of this darkness without perfect and rigorous celibacy. The worldly ways of life are like jostling from pillar to post. Even this work, these broken images of humans, cannot perform with ease. Self realisation through Sahaja Yoga is a far fetched idea for them.
Therefore, the main duty is to preserve the semen & for this, rectification of food culture is unavoidable. The easy and practicable techniques of self-realisation through detachment, devotion and yoga, have been dealt with in this book. If anybody adopts these methods and observes them rigorously, he can attain unmixed lasting spiritual peace. The social divisions and labels do not interfere with the pursuit.

The life of the Holy Sage, the liberated soul, Maharaja Amrit Nathji and his deeds are ideal for human life. He was a lofty stalwart soul. There must have been only a few saints of the caliber of the revered yogi AmritNathji Maharaja.
He was a perfect celibate, perfect and accomplished Yogi, perfectly non-avaricious, extremely benevolent, solely selfless, impartial, altruist to the nth degree and flawless epitome of forgiveness and equanimity.
Many egoistic, arrogant, greedy, learned vedan+tins bowed before him, the Holy Sage; they had no answer to his questions.
His sacrifice, penance, life style, teachings etc. were all ideal and directed toward one goal - the good of the people. He was not a professional teacher. He was the true teacher who filled the inner self of the deserving disciple with befitting contents.
One cannot achieve success in Yoga till one’s heart is filled with devotion. One cannot enjoy the benediction of the self till one practices yoga to the success. This is true, eternally.

All the holy places and shrines are at the feet of the Holy Guru deva; his words are Divine aphorisms of the Vedas ; Sam+kara feels that the disease of the worldly imbroglios is eradicated.

Shri Amritnath ji Maharaj was born in the year 1909 (of the Vikram era) , in the Shukla Paks+ha of the month Chaitra i.e. on March 21, 1852(English calender) as a son of Chetna Ramji .
He was the fifth child to Chetna Ramji.
Baba ji showed sign of his uniqueness at the time of birth ,
Mothers undergo pangs at the birth of a baby. But he born very smoothly. His mother felt no pangs. Ordinarily the head of the baby comes out of the passage first. But in his case, the feet came out first. All babies cry at birth, but he laughed. He displayed a row of teeth in his mouth and was as developed as a one year baby usually was. There was a shine on his forehead, the complexion of the skin was fair, his face had the glory of divinity, his arms were unusually long - upto the knees; his eyes had the charm of a lotus flower; all these features showed that the baby was different, extra ordinary.

An astrologer was called and asked to predict the future of the baby. He came, made his calculations, analysed, studied them and declared that the baby was a divine soul; he would glorify his family, illumine the surroundings and awaken the souls spiritually. He was born in the conjuction of the stars as would make him compassionate, benevolent, celibate, possesionless and imbued with the knowledge of God. He would be a great yogi, roam the country and alleviate the suffering of innumerable people. He would amaze the erudite and ascetics by his spiritual insight and wisdom. Thousands would be uplifted from the mire of suffering and many more would enjoy the bliss of divine grace through him. Lakhs will have redemption from suffering; sin and damnation.
He will enrich the lives of the people by sharing with them his experiences of spiritual life and they will feel fulfilled in his company. In short, he would enlighten the path of virtue, gentleness, purity and dedication to God. His name is Yash Ram The flag of his fame would wave high and the fame would live for long-long time to come.

YASH RAM’S CHILDHOOD
The child grew up like the phases of the moon grow. His extra-ordinary actions amazed the parents and others in the family. At the age of six months, he looked as if he was two years old. Likewise, he would race and work, and surpass his equals and elders in calibre. In race he proved extra-ordinary and used to defeat adults.
He displayed complete detachment from wordly possessions. He would keep nothing for himself. If he had anything and somebody asked for it, he would at once part with it.
Once, when he was three years old, a mendicant came up to the door of the house. He remained there for quite sometime and would not move away. The boy Yashram was playing with his friends. The mendicant saw him and the others and uttered such words which meant. ”As a Jat you are of unique quality, the doors of your heart would open up.” The people around desired to speak to him about his pronouncement, but he went away without answering anybody’s question.
The boy’s kindness, benevolence, physical might and divine power began budding and flowering into fuller expression.
His body was strong and well-developed; his for head was broad, his long arms reached upto his knees; his chest was broad, his eyes emitted the rays of divinity, his speech was sweet and carried weight and force. He was fearless, simple, sober and unwavering. The people would view him and feel surprised.
Many and various accounts of his person, inner and outer, spread around. People would come, gather around him, watch him and go away expressing their views variously. They would not feel satisfied of viewing him. Their souls remained hungry of receiving something, which they did not know of, and which their inner souls had been looking for, for incarnations past. They would reach Chetan Ram and say, ”Brother Chetan! Shri Rama Himself has descended upon your family.”
He almost enchanted the people with his smile. He remained very serious during plays with his friends. His dealings with them were gentle and full of love, consideration and sympathy. The playmates were always full of care and love for him. The elders in the family and the neighbourhood would watch his activities with keen interest and felt immensely impressed with them. He would be engrossed in an activity to the extent that he would not listen to, or pay attention to what one would say to him at that time. His concentration would not waver.
His food habits were simple, controlled and regular. People used to get surprised when they came to know about his food and intake. His playmates took him as ideal and began emulating him. Gradually the family members, too, began emulating him. In conversations he would utter words and sentences of spiritual value. That had a deep impact on the mind of the listener. People gradually began developing a kind of faith in his sayings.

YOUTH OF SEVEN YEARS
Though he was only seven year old, he appeared to be a youthful boy of fifteen years. The brilliance on his face was such that no one could look into his eyes. His strength was such that a fully grown up adult could not compare with him. A boy from a farmer’s family is supposed to go for grazing cattle in the pasture. But no one told him to do this.
When the other children of the same age took their cattle out for grazing, he also followed the example. But, when he took his cattle for grazing, he would sit in a solitary corner of the forest and observe silence for long hours. The animals also would behave themselves. They too loved and respected him. They would roam the marked area and return to him at the appointed time. Their behavior showed signs of discipline, dignity and love as humans do. The holy person would stay in the forest and go without food and water for days together. The animals, too, felt sad when separated from him, their master.
His mother would offer him food and clothes for the upkeep of the body and life but he would desist. Rarely would he oblige her by accepting food and clothes.
At will, he would take to the domestic duties and complete the task of three or four days in a short while. He would abstain from taking food for days together and sometimes he would eat in one day that would suffice for three or four days. This surprised many people.
He rarely spoke, but whenever chose to do so, he did so in a didactic manner. He would preach that the world was transitory and would advise not to waste the precious opportunity in the pursuits of dream like ambitions. He would warn against such endeavors. He would also advise to reduce the food intake and restrict the consumption of luxury items in order to be able to enjoy the life.
The revered sage, when a child, was not sent to school for learning. He was, therefore, illiterate. Still, he would explain the puzzling problems of the philosophical systems, the scriptures, theological epics and canonical books.
He used to diet only on the butter milk, water melon, honey, carrots, reddish and a saltiest preparation of curd of millet flour called Rabari. He would advise visitors also to take these in diet
dispassionate outlook gained intensity day by day. People began fearing him as they were deeply impressed by his austerity. But, he was and remained loving to all. His mother’s love for him restrained him from leaving the home.
Gradually he reached the threshold of the youthful adult age. Chetan Ram had married all his children. He was of the marriageable age. When told of the plan of his marriage, he came out with a vehement negation declaring that he would remain celibate all through his life. It was a terrible vow. All were taken aback by it. None dared to talk to him on the subject of marriage thereafter.
He showed equanimity of temper in all situations. He would not rejoice in the event of gain and would not lament in the case of loss. None was inimical to him nor was anyone friendly.
His dispassionate outlook gained intensity day by day. People began fearing him as they were deeply impressed by his austerity. But, he was and remained loving to all. His mother’s love for him restrained him from leaving the home.

THE SAD DEMISE OF MOTHER HE LEAVES ON PILGRIMAGE

In the year 1945 of the Vikrama era i.e, 1888 AD, during winter, his mother left for heavenly abode. Advised by his father, he took the ashes to Haridwar. Although there was a railway network to carry the passengers to places, he decided to cover the distance on foot. He took some companions on the journey.
In those days there were way layers who would ambush and attack. As the group rested for a night somewhere thieves took away
The belongings of some of them. In the morning they woke up to the reality of the loss. They were aware of the inner powers of the Revered Divine soul. They pleaded to him for help. Overtaken by kindness, he recovered the stolen belongings. Nobody knew how he did it but this made his companions jubilant. They started regarding him as an avatar of Divinity. The journey to Haridwar over, he returned home on foot.
At home he addressed his father, thus:
’Father! My loving mother has passed away. You command all the sources of the prosperity and the happiness. Now I will not stay at home. Saying this, he went away without waiting for the reply from the father. Thus at the age of about seven he came out of family life. To be exact he was of the age of six years, nine months and 14 days when he left the house and started a different life. Thereafter, he roamed the country all alone. He would not make any effort for food and water and would not go begging. If somebody offered him food etc. he would accept it. He would not ask for it. If the hunger grew stronger, he would live on leaves etc. Thus, he observed severe austerity for long time. He visited Dwarka, Girinar and the Br+aja Bhumi twice, and then returned to Rajasthan.

In those days he would express his feelings in these words:
In India there is no other state like Rajasthan, and there too, there is no other place like Shekhavati”. Here the life style is simple. The food, the water and the air here are healthy. These are necessary for healthy living, especially for a monk. In other parts of the state and the country, things are different. In other states, the simplicity has given way to artificiality. There the people are accustomed to artificial life style; and malady is increasing day by day.
”That is the reason”, he used to say, I prefer staying here and do not enjoy living out of Shekahavti.
All men, especially monks, aspire to live in peace. Clean air, clear water, healthy food, simple folk, their unaffected nature, temperament, free of caprice and crookedness, light meals and celibacy provide scope for heavenly bliss of living. All those are the means of peaceful living”.

REVERED SAGE SRI AMRIT NATHAJI
Renunciation, views on food and meals, research and journeying
In the year 1945 of Vikrama era i.e., 1888 AD, by the end of the summer, Sri Sirjan Nath ji got his tuft of hair shaved and presented to Sri Champa nathji at Varwas. Our revered Amritnathji also accompanied him to Varwas. Thus, he committed himself to be a disciple of Sri Champa Nathji in the order of The Natha Sect. Thus he, accepted and adopted the ordination of the Natha Sect. Sri Champa Nathji showered love, affection, adoration upon him & named him Amrit Nath. Sri Champa Natha ji renounced his physical body on the thirteenth day of the Shukla Paks+ha of the month Magha in the year 1972 of the Vikram era i.e,1915 AD.
For some days Shri Amrit Natha ji stayed at Varwas. His way of life and living left such a deep impression on the mind of Sri Champa Nathji that he began adoring him and accepted him with reverence. Sri AmritNathaji then set out for Yatra i.e. journey.
As per the tradition of the Natha sect in the year 1946 of Vikram era i.e, 1889 AD Sri Jwala Nathji performed the ceremony of piercing ears. During the ceremony an amazing incident occurred. Sri Jwala Nathji was quite dexterous in the act of performing the ceremony. Yet, he wavered when he was about to pierce the second ear. His hands quivered and fear engulfed him. He refused to perform the act on the second ear. Sri Amrit Nathji exhorted him to place the piercing instrument at the correct place and he himself pierced his second ear. This act surprised everybody. He put the cleaned neem stub in the holes and went away into the forest.
After this ceremony the members of the sect for some days stay at one place and eat the sweet pie made of wheat flour fried in purified butter and boiled in water with sugar. They wash the wounded ears with Neem water regularly till they are cured. But, Amrit Nathji roamed the forest all alone and ate the fruits of Khejari tree. He did not wash his wounded ears, nor applied any medicament. In a few days the earsfully recovered.
In mother orders of the Sadhus in the Natha sect also, it is difficult to meet a properly initiated monk who has renounced the worldly life. To pierce the ear with ones own hands shows the intensity of the urge to be initiated in the Natha order of the monks. To bear cheerfully the pain of the ceremony enhances the glory of the Natha sect. This ritual for a nath monk is very necessary as it symbolises the faith and love for the order. Guru Goraksha Nathaji started this practice. He prescribed this tough ritual only to save his followers from wavering from the path of resolute observance of austerity and to detract them from the pursuits of the so called pleasures, which the family offers and provides.
The followers of the Natha Sect, who do not get their ears pierced are called Augharh. According to the tradition of the robe and the sect, they deserve only half the amount which a devotee offers. Moreover, they can be compelled into the service of the fully initiated monks. In a way the practice of piercing the ears is good for the followers. This prevents the mind of the followers from going astray or from changing over to another sect. After this ceremony the desire to change or go back to the previous way of living dies for ever. This ceremony of piercing the ears was performed on his ears at the age of 39.
After this he set out to travel. Where he went, where he stayed and for how long, no one knows because he journeyed all alone. During these days he preferred staying all alone and away from the hustle and bustle of social life.
Truly speaking the pleasures of self contemplation and peace can only be enjoyed in solitary living. The saying ”Ekas Tapo” signify self contemplation and self realisation and which can be accomplished only in solitude, is true and correct. That is why in the system called Varn+asrama, the convention of the fourth stage, the
stage of an anchorite, was initiated. The foremost duty of an anchorite would be to live in solitude, where he could achieve the grace of self-realisation.
During his extensive travels, he decided to carry out experiments in dietary. He observed the effect of food, medicines and drinks on his own person and gained vast experience. He carried out awe-inspiring experiments. This experimentation and the knowledge gained as a result of the experience put him ahead of all the dieticians, the studious scientists, researchers and the publicists in this field. His views on foods and their habits are of a very high order and are destined to bring about peace and benign effect.
In this respect we must admit that so far no one could discover such an easy way to health-promoting food technology as he did. Only Amritnathji descended on the earth with the vast knowledge of foods, their effects on the body systems and their efficacy to promote spiritual advancement beside the health of the mind and the body taken together. Revered Amritnathji was a pioneer of the science of spiritual and physical health through improved food technique and saviour of mankind who, time and again, cautioned against the evil effects of the prevalent food habits. He placed before the people the essence of knowledge which can accord sting peace at all levels of corporate social structure and can promote, lasting harmony of body, mind and soul, thus paving way for the spiritual bliss on largest possible scale of consciousness on the planet. This is his novel discovery based on experiments on his own person. Thousands of his followers lived up to his teachings, gained experience, enriched their lives and enjoyed the bliss of spiritual and physical well-being.

TRAVELS, SPIRITUAL POWER AND GENEROSITY
By now the common folk had acquainted themselves well with his qualities. Many patients with incurable diseases had regained health with his blessings.
Many a times patients suffering from agony of disease came and fell at his feet, entreated for mercy and prayed for the alleviation of the pain. The emotion of compassion unsurged in his heart and instantly the condition of the patient was ameliorated. Symptoms of the pain appeared on the body of our revered sage.
An accomplished Yogi is endowed with supernatural powers. At will he can enter another body after renouncing his own. He can assume a minuscule or a gigantic form at will. Many such things or similar ones were perceived by the people who loved and moved with him, our revered sage.
Sura Simha was from the ksatriya class. He contacted leprosy somehow. During the course, the disease assumed an appalling form. Sura Simha underwent longlasting treatment, but in vain. He came to our revered sage and prayed for mercy after narrating his tale of woe and suffering.
The sage advised him to chew neem leaves. The patient expressed his difficulty saying how could he chew such bitter leaves. The sage told him that the bitterness would vanish if he chewed. Sura Simha began the treatment. On chewing, he found that the leaves were sweet. After a few days he found that the body was free of the leprous symptoms.
The revered sage spent most of his time in forests. Towards the south of the village there was a mound. At the top of the mound there was a neem tree. He, the revered sage, many a times used to stay under its shade.
There was one Ram Dev Jajodiya. He was from the VaiSya clan. He got a platform erected around this neem tree. The sage stayed at this platform occassionally. People enjoyed peace and happiness at the platform under the shade of the neem tree. The platform still stands at its place. Behind it, and slightly away from it, there is a cremation ground. There is a pond nearby. The land for the pond was dedicated by the inspiration of our revered sage. The Khejad+a trees stands near the pond and the cremation ground. The sage forbade the cutting of the Khejad+a trees. Once Tulasa Jat, who happened to be the village head, had got the trees of the pond slashed. On this the sage reacted saying, Tulasa has not slashed the trees but the head of anascetic.
The reaction of the saint sent Tulasa into the frenzy of fear. The revered sage summoned Tulasa into his audience through Sri Bhauma Natha ji who was living with the sage in those days. Tulasa was in a very bad state due to the frenzy of fear. He could not turn up. After a few hours, Tulasa expired. Even today the pond is related with the aSrama. Its trees are not cut. The animals graze near the pond. The birds enjoy themselves in the greenery thus saved.
After the departure of the sage from this world, Sri Lala Nathji and Bhauma Nathaji began living there. Sri Bhauma Natha ji got some houses also built in the area. A memorial to Bhauma Nathji stands here. These days Siva Nathaji stays in the ashrama and claims of being a disciple of Sri Bhauma Nathji. A memorial to Sri Late Tota Nathji also stands nearby.
Once the younger son of one Tej Singh Ks+atriya got ill. He was in a very serious condition. The symptoms of death began appearing on his person. He was brought into his audience. Laughingly he remarked that the patient was famished. He should be fed with milk. The mother of incurable patient took him into her lap and suckled him. The suckling child instantly recovered from the sickness.
During these days Sri Narayan Dasa, Narayan Giri, Aminatha, Bhauma Nath and some other monks were in his service. Shekhavati is a sandy tract. In summer the area becomes excessively hot, but our revered sage used to stay in open area, having no shelter against the hot wind or the sun rays and the heat emitted by the sand. The monks accompanying him also lived the same way. Although these monks had no spiritual power to withstand the onslaught of the hot winds, yet they stood the weather under the protective shield of His Holiness.
With the passage of summer the revered sage visited Navalagadha and spent the four rainy months under the open sky. He, the sage, never moved towards the shade to save himself and his
entourage from the shower or torrents. He and his companions stayed under the open sky on the open uncovered land. During winter he, our revered sage, did not cover his body with any kind of apparel. This weather too he braved in the open. After winter he arrived at Churu.
At Curu he felt inspired to consume one kg of raw mercury. He did so under the instigation of an Ayurvedic physician. When the other monks and the populace of the area learnt of the act, they all frenzied out of fear and anxiety. But the physiology of the body did not show any sign of consumption of the poison. This was an extra ordinary and super-natural feat on the part of our revered sage. When questioned about reasons behind the act, he avoided presenting any explanation.
These days he conducted many experiments regarding foods and drinks and also induced his followers to do the same. This had a wide and deep impact on the hearts of the people.
At Fatehpur he entered the deep and dense forest and stayed in a cave which he got built up for himself. Sri Santosa Natha ji was with him. The cold weather was extremely unkind towards the beasts and birds. Many were dying on account of the cold weather as their system could not bear it. Due to extreme cold the foliage was almost burnt.

Relinquishing of the body
It was the day of Purnima the month Asvina of the year 1973 VE i.e, 1916 AD. At about 3 O’clock in the afternoon, the revered sage called his dear disciples JyotiNath and Krsna Nath to his side. He placed his one hand on the head of JyotiNath ji and held the hand of Krsna Natha in his other hand. He spoke to them in a very soft voice. He told them in an encouraging tone to live fearlessly and happily after he had left. He said, ”I am leaving now. You lead your life fearlessly and on the principles of equanimity, detachment and benevolene. I am very much satisfied with the way you have been conducting yourselves. You will enjoy perfect peace. I have a divine place for you.”. After he had spoken these words there was a loud cracking sound. He was smilling. He closed his eyes in peace. Slowly and gradually breathing decreased and stopped. A flash of light was emitted out of the body.
With the extinction of life of the sage, clouds gathered in the sky, heavy downpour followed. The news spread in the villages like lightening. Flocks of people thronged the aSrama. Many devotees worshipped the body religiously. By evening the holy sage, his body, was given the Samadhi in the bungalow in which he lived. The devotees, their hearts, were aflame with sorrow. But the blessed disciple of the holy sage. Sri Jyoti Nathaji calmed everybody with his softening words.
A lamp was placed there; that was to emit light without interruption- for ever. It is burning incessantly even now.
