Amer Awadh Al Rawas

Amer Awadh Al Rawas (; (born May 1, 1967) is an Omani businessman, entrepreneur and academic. He is currently the Chairman of Themar Group, an investment holding group based in the Sultanate of Oman, the Oman Society for Petroleum Services (OPAL), Solar Wadi, and the Industrial Innovation Center (IIC). He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Middle East Leadership Academy (Mela), and the non-resident Dean of the School of Information Technology and Business at New Vision University in Georgia. In 2020, he was appointed as the Honorary Consul of Estonia in Oman. In August 2021, he was featured in Alam Al Iktisaad magazine's list of the 100 most prominent Omani CEOs.
Early life and education
Al Rawas was born in Oman to Awadh Al Rawas, one of eight children. One of his brothers, Dr. Mohammed Awadh Al Rawas, is the Director General of Traffic at the Royal Omani Police.
Al Rawas studied Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, and specialized in Software Engineering. He quickly excelled during his academic years, and became noticed after earning the Rediffusion Simulation, Ltd Prize for the Best Software Engineer Graduation Project at the University of Brighton in 1990. After that, he was offered a two-year visiting scholarship at NASA's software research lab in the United States.
In 1997, Al Rawas obtained a PhD in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence from the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom.

Although his area of specialization is Software Engineering, his research expanded in scope over time to cover the role of ICT in Economic Development, Socioeconomic and Demographic Drivers for Economic Growth.
Academic career
In 1998, Al Rawas joined the academic team of Sultan Qaboos University in Muscat, Oman, as a lecturer in Computer Science. At the same time, he served as the university's Director of the Center for Information Systems. Between May 2001 and June 2002 he was the university's Dean of Educational Services. Since 2018, Al Rawas is the non-resident Dean of the School of Information Technology and Business at New Vision University in Georgia. He also served as a board member of the Oman Academic Accreditation Authority from 2001 till 2019.
Professional career
Al Rawas started his professional career in the private sector in July 2002 when he was appointed Executive Vice President of Oman Telecommunications Company (OMANTEL) with the aim of preparing the government-owned company for market liberalization through privatization and the introduction of competition. In 2004, he contributed to the launch of Oman Mobile and became its first managing director until 2009. Oman Mobile was established by the Omani government to operate as an independent company in charge of the mobile license, while the wire line license remained with Omantel. a position that he held until June 2014.
From the telecommunications industry, Al Rawas moved to the oil and gas sector in 2014, when he was appointed as the Group Chief Executive Officer of Tasneea Oil and Technology LLC. He chairs Themar Group, an Oman-based holding company he established in 1997, and from 2019 till 2020, he was the Chairman of the National Security Services Group, Oman's leading proprietary cybersecurity consultancy and managed security services firm. He currently serves as Chairman of Solar Wadi, Al Rawas is also the Chairman of the Industrial Innovation Center (IIC),
Awards and Achievement
Throughout his career, Al Rawas racked up many awards and achievements. Many of which were earned during his tenure as CEO of Omantel. Indeed, in 2008 he won the NTI BizPro Business Leader of the Year Award; in 2012, he got the Best Human Recourses Focused CEO Award of the 4th GCC HR Excellence Awards in 2012; that same year, he also received the Best Asian Business Leader Award by the Asian Business Leadership Awards; the following year, he was named the Best Pioneer Leader in SAMENA Region at the “Convergence to Oman 2013” conference; and in 2014 he received the Award of Best Transformation Leader Prize by Alam Al Iqtisad Wa al Aamal (AIWA) magazine. In 2015, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Beyond Borders organization (within Star Business Awards).<ref name="Noble" />
