Alyssa Bustamante (born 28 January 1994) is an American student currently in custody of the state of Missouri awaiting trial on charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action regarding the death of Elizabeth Olten. Biography Early life and education Alyssa Dailen Bustamante was born 28 January 1994. In 2002, her grandmother was given legal guardianship of Alyssa and her three younger siblings. The family lives in St. Martins, Missouri at 626 Lomo Drive (four houses down from her alleged victim), where Alyssa attended Jefferson City High School and has been described by the school principal as ranking in roughly the top third of her class and had been in no trouble at school or with the law. Elizabeth Olten murder At around 6:15 PM on October 21, 2009, 9 year old Elizabeth Olten disappeared whilst returning home from Bustamante's house, where she had been playing with Alyssa's younger sibling. By 7pm Elizabeth had still not returned home and due to the fact Elizabeth was afraid of the dark and the woods by which she walked home, her parents contacted the police. An extensive search was mounted consisting of hundreds of volunteers, over 100 law enforcement, emergency workers and local officials. A helicopter using infrared detection devices was also called in to assist with the search on the first night, On the 23rd of October Elizabeth's body was discovered and Alyssa was arrested in connection to the girl's death. The County Sheriff Greg White later released a statement saying "We were able to obtain some physical evidence and through some analysis of some of the evidence and in all honesty some written evidence, we were able to develop a person of interest. Once we reached that person and interviewed them, ultimately, they led us to where we've recovered Elizabeth's body". Alyssa appeared in court in the 18th November 2009 charged with 1st Degree Murder and Armed Criminal Action. The judge assigned to the case, Patricia S Joyce, entered pleas of not guilty on Alyssa's behalf and the case was set for status on December 7, 2009 at 9.00am. It has been ruled that Alyssa will be tried as an adult and the next court hearing is a status conference set for Tuesday the 16th of February 2010 on the fourth floor courtroom in the Cole County Courthouse, Jefferson City at 9.00am under case number 09AC-CR03516 .
