The Alternative is an Irish radio show broadcast daily on RTÉ 2XM and weeknights on RTÉ 2fm. Presented by Dan Hegarty, it is broadcast from 11:00 - 13:00 on 2XM and 23:00 - 01:00 on 2fm. It replaced its forerunner, The Alternative to Sleep in March 2012 and is broadcast in the same time-slot on 2fm. Hegarty plays a varied selection of alternatively genred independent and classic music, sometimes with live music from festivals and events. Recent interviews conducted by the presenter include Jape and Joan As Policewoman. Hegarty is known for championing such acts as Buck 65, God Is an Astronaut, Saul Williams and Giveamanakick.
