Alice Yard is an art space in the Woodbrook area of Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad. Many artists of all types, from musicians to photographers to performers to visual artists and beyond have worked, played, and performed there. Most notably, Alice Yard is home to 12 The Band. History Alice Yard was begun by Sean Leonard, and according to the website, "This was once the house of architect Sean Leonard’s great-grandmother. Four generations of children played and imagined in this yard, and now Leonard continues this tradition. Alice Yard is a space for creative experimentation, collaboration, and improvisation." Alice Yard was also host to Friday night "Conversations in the Yard", until certain complication arose. Conversations was begun by Sheldon Holder and was a venue in which someone of expertise in a specific field (usually art related) led a discussion. These Conversations were open to all and became fairly popular in Port of Spain. The Artists The list of artists, musicians and bands associated with Alice Yard is long and complex. Some rehearse there, others perform, still others simply facilitate the art of others, so the complete list may take time and constant updating. Press Article by Mariel Brown on "Conversations in the Yard", from Caribbean Beat, May/June 2008: Report on Barbadian artist Sheena Rose's Town, from the Trinidad Guardian, 14 June, 2009: The Boston Globe: "There are vibrant intelligentsia throughout the Caribbean; the image of partying parrotheads was cultivated for the tourist trade. As countries reinvest in their histories and cultures, fresh entertainments are everywhere. A sampling from tiny Tobago: the Itsy Bitsy Folk Theatre of tambourine music, jig, folk dance, and reel; Luise Kimme's castle studio of life-size sculptures; and Friday night "Conversations in de Yard," where local bands and artists gather in an informal salon in Alice Yard, the backyard space of architect Sean Leonard's house in Port of Spain."
