Alaa Abd-Elsayed

Alaa Abd-Elsayed is an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in the Department of Anesthesiology. Throughout his career, he has earned multiple research grants, published over two hundred publications that have been peer-reviewed, and written a number of editorials and book chapters.
Education
Abd-Elsayed earned his medical degree from Assiut University Medical School in Egypt, completed a master's degree in public health, a research fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic, an anesthesiology residency at the University of Cincinnati, and a pain management fellowship there as well.
Research and career
Abd-Elsayed is a clinical investigator in addition to being a pain expert. His current research focuses on the use of opioids, genetic differences that affect an individual's response to opioids, neuromodulation, and peripheral nerve stimulation in the treatment of neuropathic pain. Additionally, he does studies on fibromyalgia, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), neuromodulation, novel devices and headaches. The research conducted at the laboratory of Abd-Elsayed focuses on developing novel clinical strategies for treating chronic pain and general pain management.
With more than 15 years of professional experience, Abd-Elsayed is the first division chief of Chronic Pain Medicine and the first medical director of UW Health Pain Services at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.
Abd-Elsayed described several novel procedures for treating different pain conditions including the ablation technique for treating migraine headache and radiofrequency ablation for treating greater trochanteric bursa pain syndromes.
Awards and honors
Abd-Elsayed's honors include the Young investigator travel award (2013), Leading physicians of the world (2016-present), top 100 pain management doctors (2018), and America's Best Physicians (2016-present).
He serves on the leadership team of several societies including ASIPP, NANS, ASPN, WSA and more. He also served on the State Medical Board of Wisconsin from 2016-2020.
