Al Ramirez (Born Alberto J. Ramirez, December 22, 1968) is a Republican candidate for the United States Senate in California. Ramirez is a telecommunications sales professional who first came to LA in 1997. He established a residence in Santa Monica, California in the summer of 2002. Childhood and Family Heritage Born and raised in Dallas, Texas Ramirez is the oldest of three children. His family heritage is a mix of cultures. His father is half Mexican on his father's side and one quarter Choctaw and one quarter Spanish Creole on his mother's side. Ramirez' mother was born in Mexico and her father's ancestors were French immigrants who settled in Mexico after the French Intervention. Ramirez attended public and private schools in Dallas and graduated from Bishop Dunne Catholic High School. Early Young Adult Life In 1987 Ramirez volunteered to serve in the Marine Corps after graduation but a knee operation changed his plans. While facing a personal disappointment he found mentors that gave him a chance as a college student at Mountain View Community College to continue to serve his community. He got involved in the Republican Party, local Chambers of Commerce and Youth Intervention Counseling Centers. This propelled him into his first opportunity in politics by running for Dallas City Councilman in 1991. Entering Politics Ramirez ran against the incumbent Dr. Charles Tandy to stop his opponent's charge to secede from the city of Dallas. The effort gained Ramirez some earned media among the local television news as an upstart challenger. The results provided Ramirez an invitation from the Dallas County Republican Party to serve on the 1992 ticket as a Nominee for the Texas State Legislature which gained him additional recognition for being an up and coming conservative. Texas House Race The 1992 general election pitted him against attorney Roberto Alonzo. While facing an uphill battle in a predominately Democratic district Ramirez managed to gain endorsements that represented support from Fortune 500 and Pro-Business Coalitions and he enjoyed the support of the then Chairman of the UT Board of Regents. Education While running for the City Council and Texas Legislature Ramirez attended and graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas. As a student he served as a Student Senator and was a founding father of his chapter of Kappa Sigma. He graduated with a B.A. in American Studies and also attended graduate studies at UTD. Career A fortunate introduction during the campaign for State Representative lead Ramirez to a career in the telecom industry beginning at AT&T which lead to deal winning roles at Sprint, Verizon and Qwest. He's also been a key player at leading startup ventures and held a leadership role at Samsung that included assignments in Korea and Washington DC. It was during the Internet Boom that Ramirez began to conduct business in California. Upon moving to Los Angeles Ramirez combined his telecommunications expertise with his political resume getting back into government service by negotiating new contracts with State and Local governments with Public Communications Services, Inc.. The technology he implemented improved protection for the rights of victims, preserved legal due process and provided improvements in law enforcement department budgets. During this venture he was part of a team providing support for the Department of Homeland Security to deport those who enter the country illegally. 2010 U.S. Senate Bid In November 2008 Ramirez announced his intention to begin forming an exploratory committee to consider challenging Barbara Boxer for the United States Senate Seat held by Boxer since 1992. Ramirez filed paperwork to register his candidacy with the Federal Elections Commission in June 2009. Ramirez officially launched his campaign to challenge Boxer on October 28, 2009 at the National Republican Senatorial Committee Headquarters. A November 2009 Survey USA poll showed Ramirez competitive with Carly Fiorina and Chuck DeVore in the Republican Primary based on Favorability. While being heavily outspent the SurveyUSA poll showed Ramirez leading Devore and Fiorina among voters between the ages of 35 to 49, Hispanics and voters in Greater Southern California. In October 2008 Ramirez was added to the Twitter Suggested User List (SUL) and has generated over 200,000 Followers. Ramirez now ranks in the Top 3 Most Followed and Most Interesting to Follow on Top Conservatives on Twitter, a movement among conservatives recognized for its use of the hashtag #tcot.
