History
The building construction for the Aizawl Adventist Hospital began in August 1986. The construction was financed by ADRA (Adventist Development & Relief Agency) International, ADRA Canada, Government of Mizoram and the Southern Asia Division of Seventh-day Adventists. But the hospital could not start functioning because of lack of trained Medical personnel. A renewed attempt by the Southern Asia Division was made in 1995 when a study commission under the chairmanship of Pastor J.M Campbell went to Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram. The report of this commission was a landmark document which showed the feasibility of running a hospital in Aizawl.
In August 1995, B Narendra Rao, a physician, and his wife Daisy Rani Rao, an ophthalmologist arrived in Aizawl along with their children. He was to be the first medical director of the hospital. The hospital building which was in a state of disrepair had to be renovated and remodeled. This work, along with ordering equipment and furniture took about 5 months to complete. During this period, the Raos' began the medical work on an outpatient basis at their residence. Language was one of the biggest barriers that they faced, but they used translators to communicate with their patients.
On 27 February 1996 Aizawl Adventist Hospital was inaugurated opened in the presence of Dr. Martin Feldbush, Associate Director for Adventist Chaplaincy Ministries, General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists and other dignitaries from the Southern Asia Division of Seventh-day Adventists, the Northeast India Union, Central India Union and Northern India Union of Seventh-day Adventists. Also present were community leaders, church leaders and members from the neighboring locality. The Government of Mizoram was represented by the Chief Guest, Shri J. Lalsangzuala, the honorable Minister for Finance and Home Affairs. Shri C. Chawngkunga, Minister for Health was also present. Dr B Narendra Rao, the medical director gave a report on various factors that led to the establishment of the hospital. He thanked the various donors and well-wishers of the Aizawl Adventist Hospital. The notable Mizo Adventist singer, Mrs Vanhlupuii also presented a beautiful song for the glory of God. It was the first hospital run by the church in the North-East India Union of Seventh-day Adventists.
