Adjusted Goals Against Average

Adjusted Goals Against Average;
Also known as the Goalie Goals Against Average
This average was designed as a way to more accurately measure a goalie’s true ability, based on the disadvantages he may face during a game. This formula is an expansion of the original standard, known as Goals Against Average (# of goals/60 minutes). Adjusted Goals Against Average allocates a portion of the responsibility of a goal to the rest of the team, based on the percentage to which they contributed to the situation.
The Adjusted Goals Against Average simply weights the value of the Goals Against, based on the disadvantage to the goaltender.
The value system is this:
Even strength Goal Against: 1.00 -
Short one player Goal Against: 0.75 -
Short two players Goal Against: 0.50
Example:
A Goalie allows 3 goals in 60 minutes of play - 1 even strength, 1 short one player, 1 short two players
G.A.A. = 3.00/60 minutes
A.G.A.A. = 2.25/60 minutes
With the A.G.A.A. measure, a portion of the responsibility for the Goal Against is transferred to the rest of the team. This has created a parallel statistic formerly unaccounted for:
Player Goals Against
This statistic is a measure of how the rest of the team’s penalties have contributed to the number of Goals Against by taking the unaccounted portion in the Adjusted Goals Against Average.
Example:
A Goalie allows 3 goals in a game - 1 even strength, 1 short one player, 1 short two players
.25 of a goal would be credited for the short one, and 0.5 of a goal would be credited
This produces a Player’s Goals Against (P.G.A.) = 0.75/game
