Action of 16 November 1943

The Action of 16 November 1943 was a small naval engagement that took place off Truk Lagoon between the Imperial Japanese Navy submarine I-176 and the United States Navy submarine USS Corvina.
Background
the US submarines USS Corvina, USS Drum and USS Blackfish intercepted a message about the arrivial of I-176 heading to Truk Atoll and were dispatched to intercept her.
The Battle
The USS Corvina located I-176 and unsuccessfully launched three torpedoes which failed to explode due to defective malfunction.
A message intercepted from I-176 reported that the vessel had received direct torpedo hits on route to Truk Atoll but suffered no damage.
At 2312 hours on November 16,Lookouts on partially submerged I-176 identified an unknown dark object illuminated by the full moonlight on the surface as it's attacker.
I-175 quickly crash dived and launched a spread of three torpedoes in quick succession of which two truck the USS Corvina on the starboardquarter- blowing up the submarine in half with all hands on board at a distance of 2,700 yards.
