Achilles Tsaltas (born August 9, 1966) is a Greek-Australian media and nonprofit executive. He is the Founder and President of the Democracy & Culture Foundation a non-profit organization that promotes “better governance and citizen engagement” and among other activities organizes the Athens Democracy Forum and the Art for Tomorrow conference in association with The New York Times. He has held various posts with News Corporation, International Herald Tribune and The New York Times in Sydney, Hong Kong, Paris and London. Early Life and Education Tsaltas was born in Sydney, Australia and was also partly raised in Patras, Greece during his primary schooling years. He attended James Cook Boys High School in Sydney and studied at University of Sydney graduating with a Bachelor of Economics (major in government) degree in 1988. He completed his Master of Arts (Sociology) degree in 1990 at the University of New South Wales. In 2012 he studied at Columbia University on Columbia Journalism School's Sulzberger Executive Leadership Program. Career Tsaltas has been responsible for creating and managing strategic partnerships with some of the world's most important media corporations. He started his media career in 1989 when he joined News Corporation at the advertising department of The Australian newspaper. During his tenure, he launched the business magazine, Business Asia, and relaunched the newspaper's The Australian Magazine, managing the commercial side of the operation. In 1999 he moved to Hong Kong to join the International Herald Tribune (IHT) as deputy managing director, successfully launching print sites in the Philippines and Taiwan as well as four publishing partnerships with JoongAng Ilbo in Korea, Asahi Shimbun in Japan, Manager in Thailand and Asian Age in India. These initiatives managed to more than double the paper's circulation in Asia. In 2004, after being seconded to the integration committee for The New York Times’ full ownership of IHT, he relocated to Paris HQ as the worldwide circulation director. In 2006 he was appointed vice president, circulation and development becoming a member of the paper's Executive Committee. In 2013 he became vice president, international conferences for The New York Times and relocated to London. In this role he launched four new conferences: Athens Democracy Forum, Art for Tomorrow, Sports Business Summit and Luxury Travel. In 2019 he was charged with setting up the Democracy & Culture Foundation that took on the organization of the two conferences he conceived - Athens Democracy Forum and Art for Tomorrow, in association with The New York Times. He worked with McKinsey & Company to produce a strategic plan with a mission to empower society through citizen engagement and better governance and in this way to contribute to the evolution of democracy in today’s world. Personal life Tsaltas lives in London and spends part of his time in Athens.
