Absolute employment is a measure of the number of the total population that is employed, the absolute numerical national workforce of a nation. Children of any age, seniors, and those unable to work are counted as unemployed. This measure is not commonly used in economics, economists as well as the general public prefer to measure employment/unemployment as percentages or ratios, as these are generally more relevant to the health of the economy. For example, a country seeing a population increase of 10% but an absolute employment increase of only 5% would actually likely be experiencing economic decline. Absolute employment roughly correlates to the percentage of the population fit for military service, which is a statistic tracked on the political/military level.
