A Second Birth

A Second Birth is a play by Ariel Mitchell. Inspired by the practice of bacha posh, the play is about Nasima, an Afghani girl, who has been raised as a boy since age five to help her family’s economic and social standing. As part of the Afghani practice of bacha posh, Nasima is disguised as a male ("Nasim") so "he" can attend school, play soccer and work outside her home for pay; as a female she cannot.  When her parents tell her she must finally give up her job and education in order to resume her life as a girl so she can marry, Nasima must confront the relationships of her past and the traditions her culture posing critical questions about gender, equal opportunities and marriage.
