34th Street Magazine is the weekly arts and culture magazine published by The Daily Pennsylvanian, the independent daily student newspaper of the University of Pennsylvania. It is also known as 34th Street or more simply, Street, in reference to its early days when its office was located on 34th Street. Street contains a variety of local and arts and culture-related features and reviews. Its sections include Film, Music, Food & Drink, Ego (style and trends), Guides (events and how-to features), Highbrow (society, opinion, and general introduction), and Lowbrow (humor). The magazine also contains a longer researched or investigative piece that usually focuses on some aspect of the university or its surrounding city, Philadelphia. Often snarky in tone, the magazine provides comedic relief from its more serious counterpart, The Daily Pennsylvanian. Street is published every Thursday during the academic year (except during examination and vacation periods) by a staff of over 25 editors, as well as countless contributors. During the summer, Street is combined with the weekly version of the Daily Pennsylvanian to produce one or two pages of arts and culture coverage produced by a much smaller staff. The 2010 executive board consists of editor-in-chief Sarah Beth McKay, managing editor Raya Jalabi, design editor Kendall Haupt and Under the Button managing editor Hillary Reinsberg. The largest issue of the year is the Best of Penn issue. Published in the spring, it draws upon the results of a student poll in categories ranging from best place to pretend to study to best place to witness a power trip. Another popular Street feature is the biannual shoutout article, which allows for Penn students to anonymously air their grievances with other students, faculty, or the university at large. In the fall of 2008, Street launched its blog, Under the Button. The name references Penn lore that students engage in mischief under Klaus Oldenburg's broken in front of Van Pelt library.
