Craddock. Born in New York City raised in Park Slopes, Brooklyn. The group combines the phrases (Two, New, Young and Original)
History
The three sisters grew up with a strong musical background. Their aunt Shalida was a very talented young singer. In her late teenage years she was to be signed to Sony Music Entertainment, but she decided on raising a family instead. 2NYO’s mother Stephanie was also a talented vocalist, who caught the eye of Def Jam Records, but wanted to focus on her three daughters future careers. 2NYO’s cousin Cindy Mizelle is a singer who currently sings and tours with Bruce Springsteen. She has sung back-up for the The Rolling Stones and Mariah Carey, who made mention of her on American Idol as the greatest back-up singer. She sang for the late Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross and many more. She has also written songs for other artists, such as Aretha Franklin.
2NYO was once called the KIT Crew when they were younger, then later changed their names to K.I.A, XOXO, Precizion and then finally 2NYO, the name that felt right. They began performing at The Brooklyn Waldorf School for Black History Month. The positive reaction from the crowd solidified that this was something that they knew they wanted to do forever. After Kia graduated from the High School of Fashion Industries in 2014. 2NYO then started their professional career in music full time.
The groups first release “Roll With Me” which was released in late August 2014. The single was later played in the UK on SOHO Radio by Southern Hospitality. This gained the attention of the editors at FACT Magazine and many others including the Hyperdub signed Canadian electronic songwriter, producer and vocalist Jessy Lanza, who placed Roll With Me in her Play List for the Pitchfork Music Festival and her tours which was featured on ID-Vice. The song continued to be recognized by such notables as Alex Macpherson who is a freelance writer for magazines such as BBC Music, The Guardian, The Quietus and FACT Magazine; which later Alex Macpherson featured Roll With Me on several FACT Magazine articles and The Quietus as well as Chris Kelly, Rob Pursey and Davey Boy Smith. In December 2014, rounding out the year's amazing R&B songs was Roll With Me at No. 41 on Buzzfeed.
Career
The three sisters Kia Aoleon Craddock (b. August 19, 1995), India Malese Craddock (b. July 7, 1998) and Ashante Ashana Craddock (b. June 20, 2000) were born and raised in New York City. Their American born parents Timor and Stephanie, were both music loving people. Both Timor and Stephanie influenced 2NYO’s sound of music by playing many old school artists such as Chic, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Prince and Michael Jackson as an example. Ashanti (aka) Tiyanna showed an aptitude for the acoustic guitar, and later went to guitar school for a couple of months, she also became very adept at coming up with melodies. Kia’s ear for music started at the tender age of 8 when she wrote the short song Homie, Lover, Friend. Kia and her sisters later wrote “Talking” at the ages of 10, 7 and 5. Kia also picked up Art at 13, and became a very talented artist even gaining the attention of the Metropolitan Museum for her knowledge of Art History. India later after seeing her older sister write, began writing songs non-stop and picked up Digital Art. India’s skills include Website Design and American Sign Language, a skill that she shares with her younger sister Tiyanna.
India and Tiyanna for one year had a band together called XOXO and Precizion while Kia was in High School. The duet looked at their group as pop, rock and neo soul. They performed at a gig that caught the attention of someone in the music industry, but nothing came of it. It was not until Kia finished school and joined with 2NYO as a trio to do the video on Youtube covering Beyonce’s song Yonce that the girls caught the attention of an ambitious gentleman from Atlanta, who loved the girls look, but, was unable to get their sound or fund a project for the girls. In the end, he was only able to give them some direction. With a little advice and ambition 2NYO created Roll With Me. As 2NYO has matured they have come under the realization that music styles change often from pop, to rock, r&b, alternative, electronic and more. The girls have discovered their sound to be the incorporation of all genres, because they grew up to almost all music and realized good music does not have a genre. 2NYO for along time have listened to international music in all of its forms.
Musical Styles
2NYO has been compared to the girl group version of Rihanna. Their music sound is alternative with a 80’s and 90's edge, as well as Techno, House and Disco music. The group all share some of the same musical influences such as Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, Rihanna, Whitney Houston, The Good Girls, Blondie, Cece Peniston, Robin S, Cyndi Lauper, Donna Summer, Chic, Prince to name a few. All three sisters contribute to a three part vocal harmony. 2NYO prefers to be considered as “Individual acts in a band” like the Constructions of the Transformers and so they reject the typical girl band reference. They all add their own personal magic to the group.
Kia’s individual style of music comes from her influence from artists such as Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Aaliyah, Lisa Fischer, Selena Quintanilla, Phyllis Hyman, Sade, FKA Twigs, Brick N’ Lace. India’s Individual style of music comes from her influence from artists such as Madonna, Prince, Billie Holiday, LOLA Wolf, Etta James, Minnie Riperton, Hayley Williams, Alanis Morissette, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Michael Jackson, FKA Twigs, Mariah Carey, Gwen Stefani, Chic, CeCe Peniston.
