2028 North Dakota gubernatorial election

The 2028 North Dakota gubernatorial election will be held on November 7, 2028, to elect the governor of North Dakota alongside their chosen lieutenant governor. North Dakota is considered a Republican stronghold, and the has not won a governor's race in the state since 1988.
Background
Incumbent governor Kelly Armstrong was elected in 2024 with 68% of the vote against Dem-NPL state senator Merrill Piepkorn and independent perennial candidate Michael Coachman. Upon his election, Armstrong is the first governor officially affected by term limits passed through a ballot measure in 2022
Despite a high approval rating as governor, Armstrong may face a primary challenge. As on June 14, 2025, governor Armstrong was censured by the North Dakota Republican Party over his April veto of a controversial bill that would have forced public libraries to remove books that contain what the bill deemed explicit content. Armstrong also faced opposition from the far-right side of the NDGOP over his property tax relief plan, specifically by a group affiliated with former state representative Brandon Prichard.
