2022 Caribbean Sea Piaggio P.180 Avanti crash

On 21 October 2022, Rainer Schaller, the owner of Gold's Gym, along with his wife and two children, plus two others, were killed in the crash of a German-registered Avanti into the ocean near Limón, Costa Rica. The flight had departed Palenque, Mexico. This was the first fatal accident involving a P.180 Avanti.
Accident
On 21 October 2022, a Piaggio P.180 Avanti plane carrying Schaller, his partner Christine Schikorsky, their two children, the 66-year-old Swiss pilot and another German passenger crashed into the Caribbean Sea near Limón, Costa Rica, while on a flight from Palenque, Mexico. On November 4, the remains of the two bodies were identified as those of Schaller and his son, Aaron.
Investigation
In the time period immediately following the accident, the cause of the crash was not known. Costa Rican authorities reported that the flight did not transmit any distress calls before the crash. Jorge Torres, Minister of Public Security in Costa Rica stated that it appeared that the aircraft hit the water hard. The investigation into the cause of the crash is being led by the Dirección Nacional de Aviación Civia (DGAV) - Civil Aviation, and the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) will investigate the cause of death of the bodies that were recovered. Representatives of the DGAV and representatives from Germany will issue a preliminary report on the findings and determine whether a full investigation will be conducted.
