2017 Basirhat communal violence

Riots broke out over a Facebook post that supposedly disparaged Mohammad the founder of Islam and Kaaba, by teenage schoolboy in Baduria, Basirhat subdivision, North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, India. The meme was posted on 2 July, 2017. According to Sarkar's neighbour, the post was a reaction to Muslims belonging to Basirhat and Baduria celebrating India's defeat to Pakistan in 2017 ICC Champions trophy final. The post also resulted in houses, shops, places of worship and public property including police stations and police vehicles being plundered and burnt by what has been described as marauding hordes of rioters. Rioters also demanded that the Sarkar be "handed over to them", it is reported so that he be subject to stoning to death. Posters were displayed demanding that Sarkar be hanged. One person, Kartik Das was killed in violent incidents related to the reactions to the post, he succumbed to stabbing inflicted on him on 5 July, 2017, by a group of protestors.
