2013 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game

The 2013 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game will feature the Alabama Crimson Tide, of the SEC and the Virginia Tech Hokies, of the ACC on August 31, 2013, at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. On July 7, 2011, officials from both Alabama and Virginia Tech announced the Crimson Tide and the Hokies would meet to open the 2013 season in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game. The two teams met previously in the 2009 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game game with Alabama winning 34-24.<ref name="VTannounce"/> The match-up marked Alabama's third appearance in the game and Virginia Tech's second. Game summary Alaba got off to a hot start by forcing a three-and-out on Virginia Tech and Christion Jones would return it for 72 yards resulting in a touchdown to give Alabama a 7-0 lead. Virginia Tech was forced to punt again on their next possession. Alabama was also forced to punt on their next possession and then they forced a three-and-out on Virginia Tech's next possession. Alabama finally got something going on offense when T.J. Yeldon had a 2-yd touchdown run to give the Tide a 14-0 lead. Virginia Tech struck back quickly with a Trey Edmunds 77-yd touchdown run to cut the Tide lead to 14-7. Alabama would have a 14-7 lead after the 1st Quarter. Virginia Tech forced a three-and-out on Alabama's 1st possession of the 2nd quarter. Virginia Tech did not have much success on offense as a pass by Logan Tomas was intercepted by Vinnie Sunseri who returned it 38 yards for a pick six to give Alabama a 21-7 lead. Alabama's defense would keep their momentum going as they would force a three-and-out on Virginia Tech's next possession. Virginia Tech would also force a three-and-out on Alabama's next possession. Alabama would force a three-and-out on Virginia Tech's next possession but Alabama would not have much success as AJ McCarron would throw an interception which would be intercepted by Kyle Fuller. Virginia Tech would take advantage of that interception as Cody Journell would make a 39-yd Field Goal to cut the Tide lead to 21-10. Alabama would strike back immediately when Christion Jones had a 94-yd kickoff return to give the Tide a 28-10 lead. Alabama would force a three-and-out on Virginia Tech's next possession and Alabama would have a 28-10 lead at halftime. Virginia Tech would force a three-and-out on Alabama's 1st possession of the 2nd half but Virginia Tech would be forced to punt on their 1st possession of the 2nd half. After both teams would force a three-and-out on each others next two possessions, AJ McCarron had a 38-yd touchdown pass to Christion Jones to give Alabama a 35-10 lead. The tide would have a 35-10 lead after the 3rd quarter. Virginia Tech would be forced to punt on their 1st possession of the 4th quarter. Alabama would be forced to punt on their 1st possession of the 4th quarter as well. But then, Alabama would force a three-and-out on Virginia Tech's next possession and then both teams forced a three-and-out on each other's next possessions.
