AeroGal Flight 700, a Boeing 767, was involved in a near runway collision while attempting to land at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York on September 19, 2010. Initial reports indicate that Flight 700 had been cleared by air traffic control to land on runway 13L. Instead, the AeroGal flight attempted to land on runway 13R. Runway 13R was in use by a Jet Blue flight which was in the process of taking off. The error was recognized by a Delta flight crew, who alerted the tower. The air traffic controller gave instructions to the AeroGal crew to execute an immediate right turn and was able to prevent the collision. There are reports that the ground proximity warning system at the airport was inoperative at the time of the incident. The incident is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.
