2009 Bilderberg Meeting

The 2009 annual meeting of the Bilderberg Group was held in the Astir Palace resort in Athens, Greece, from 14-16 May 2009.
According to an unnamed police source, the resort was protected by hundreds of police, coast guard, speedboats and two F-16 fighter planes .

Invitees of this year included:
* Timothy Geithner, United States Secretary of the Treasury
* Larry Summers, director of the U.S. National Economic Council
* Richard Holbrooke, the Obama administration's special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan
* Robert Zoellick, president of the World Bank
* Jean-Claude Trichet, President of the European Central Bank
* José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission
Detentions and protests
During the event several people were detained after taking photographs in the area. Charlie Skelton, from the The Guardian reported on his detentions, and Romanian journalist Paul Dorneanu was detained in Vouliagmeni.
The conference also drew several protests including separate demonstrations by the Popular Orthodox Rally and members of the Greek Communist Party.
Media coverage
This year's conference saw increased coverage from the mainstream media, such as the British The Guardian, Associated Press and the Dutch program RTL Boulevard on channel RTL 4.. Russia TV interviewed American radio personality Alex Jones. Jones said: "From the ashes of the Third Reich we see the rising of the Fourth Reich, which is a bizarre mutation and a hybrid between the British Empire, the US Empire and the Nazi Empire".
