0848 was the area code serving the Australian island of Kangaroo Island, South Australia. It was active until 3 February 1997 and was notable for being one of only two four-digit area codes (including the trunk prefix, the other being the premium rate prefix 0055) in the Australian numbering plan. As a result, subscriber numbers only had five digits (a one-digit exchange code and four-digit subscriber number). Most people wrote all five digits without any spaces, however some would write such numbers as (0848) xx xxx, in a similar way to 0055 numbers. On 3 February 1997, the 0848 code was abolished and integrated into the wider 08 area code. Instead of becoming the expected (08) 8482 1234, for example (example number being (0848) 21234), the number was changed to (08) 8553 4234. This was done because on 19 August 1996, the (08) 84 prefix was added to old Adelaide six-digit numbers (for example, the number (08) 81 2345 became (08) 8481 2345).
