The Sociedad Española de Beneficencia de Guayaquil is a philanthropic society founded on 19 August 1883 by Spanish immigrants in Guayaquil, Ecuador. It continues to operate today, providing cultural activities, social events, and charitable aid to the Spanish-Ecuadorian community.

History

The Society was established at the premises on Pedro Carbo Street No. 416, with the founding act signed by Miguel Juanola, Antonio Madinyá Vilasendra and Jaime Puig y Verdaguer among others.

In its first statutes (1901) the Society defined its aims as:

During the early 20th century, especially amid the migratory waves caused by World War I, the Spanish Civil War and World War II, the Society expanded its medical assistance, financial aid and funeral services for new arrivals in need.

Founding Objectives

According to the 1901 statutes:

  1. Provide relief to members in case of illness.
  2. Assist needy Spanish nationals.
  3. Maintain an Asylum House for indigent patients.

20th Century Development

Shortly after its foundation in 1883, the Society acquired the “Spanish Pantheon,” providing burials and mortuary care for elderly or disabled members of limited means. During the Spanish Civil War and World War II, it served as a key refuge for refugees and veterans.

Facilities and Headquarters

After more than a century on Pedro Carbo Street, the Society relocated its offices and event halls to the canton of **Samborondón**, where it now maintains modern facilities for its cultural and charitable activities.
