Gang Bao
Gang Bao is a Chinese Foyt Family Professor of bioengineering at Rice University which he joined on March 1, 2015. He is also a professor at both Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology.
Early life
Bao obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Shandong University in 1976. In 1981 he got a Master of Science degree in applied mathematics from the same university and then got his PhD in the same field in 1987 from Lehigh University.. He did his postdoc with Professor Robert McMeeking at the University of California at Santa Barbara before joining Johns Hopkins University as an assistant professor in the mechanical engineering.
Research
In 2013 his study of Streptococcus pyogenes brought him closer to treating sickle-cell disease which was followed by his development of CRISPR system which he tested on mice and monkeys and is planning to test it on humans as early as 2018.
