The ZX Spectrum Next, an expanded and updated version of the ZX Spectrum computer implemented with FPGA technology was funded by a Kickstarter campaign launched in April 2017. The board-only computer was delivered to backers in late 2017 with the complete machine released to backers in February 2020. The Next case designer, Rick Dickinson was also responsible for previous Sinclair designs, including the ZX81, Spectrum, Spectrum+, and the QL. The use of FPGA technology allows the Next to replicate a range of different hardware configurations, which are loaded from ROM at power-on, and is thus able to be configured to be totally compatible with all previous Spectrum versions, plus the ZX80, ZX81, the QL and even those of other manufacturers. The use of "ZX", "Sinclair" and "Spectrum" were agreed by arrangement with the official trademark owners.
