Zuffar Haq

Zuffar Haq is a Liberal Democrat politician in the United Kingdom. He is the party's candidate in Harborough, Oadby and Wigston (Harborough Constituency).
Early Life
Zuffar Haq was born in Leicestershire. His links to the county go back to 1919 when his Grandfather arrived in Leicester with Zuffar's father following during the Second World War to become an Air Raid Warden in Clarendon Park and take a job in a munitions factory. Zuffar's father later became a security guard.
Career
Zuffar started his own company wholesaling and retailing electrical goods in 1987, growing the business to six figures within two years. He sold the business in 2000 when his first child was born with cerebral palsy, instead supporting his family by investing in commercial property.
Political Career
Zuffar has been the Liberal Democrat candidate for the Harborough, Oadby and Wigston (Harborough Constituency) since 2010. He was previously Vice Chair of Leicestershire Crimestoppers.
Haq contested the Harborough constituency in 2010, earning 31% of the vote and losing to incumbent Edward Garnier. Haq contested the Leicester South constituency in the 5 May 2011 by-election which was triggered by Peter Soulsby's resignation. Haq contested the Harborough constituency in the 2015 General Election (earning only 13% - a reduction of nearly 10,000 votes) and is a candidate in the 2017 snap election.
Charity
Having spent much time in hospitals with his daughter Zuffar set up an international aid charity in 2001, sending unused hospital equipment to third world countries. He has since become a health campaigner holding various roles including that of Chairman of the Leicester Patients Group and as a member of the Leicester Mercury Patients' Panel. He was also part of the campaign to keep children's heart surgery at Glenfield Hospital.
Personal Life
Zuffar married in 1994, his wife is a serving Liberal Democrat councillor. His first child, a daughter born with Cerebral Palsy, died in 2009 aged 9 and a half. Zuffar and his wife have three sons.
