Yogamatters is a British online and retail store company based in London. Founded as an e-commerce company in 1998 at the dawn of the internet boom, it is manufacturing, producing and selling a variety of yoga equipment such as yoga mats and related yoga media products such as books, CDs and DVDs. Operating worldwide through its online shops, it also runs a bricks-and-mortar retail store in London. In 2008, it launched a dedicated German-language online shop for the DACH region, and supplies as shop-in-shop boutique in Berlin. History Yogamatters Ltd was founded in 1996 by Paul Walker, originally trading from the back of his car and his garage in London. With yoga products difficult to obtain at that time, selling yoga mats online proved highly popular with the yoga community who had previously resorted to carpet padding or rubbery insulation mats. Over time, the business grew with the rise in popularity of yoga. Market Position Due to its historic roots, Yogamatters is widely regarded as a community driven company. It is particularly known in the Iyengar yoga community since founder Paul Walker became a qualified Iyengar yoga teacher in 1998. Yogamatters is a key contributing sponsor to yoga events such as the London Yoga Show and the Yoga Conference in Cologne. The company provides equipment for these and other community events, and sells them B2C. It also operates a B2B wholesale division which drop-ships for other yoga shops.
