Background and Development
Xlear Nasal Spray was originally developed by Dr. Lon Jones, a family physician based in Plainview, Texas was concerned about the health of his granddaughter, who suffered from recurrent ear infections. Rather than continuing to treat the ear infections with continual rounds of antibiotic drugs, Dr. Jones began to research possible techniques to prevent the ear infections themselves .
It was during this time that Dr. Jones became acquainted with studies being conducted by Tero Kontiokari and Dr. Matti Uhari of the University of Oulu in Finland with xylitol, a sweetener that occurs naturally in fruits, berries, vegetables, mushrooms, and the human body. These studies suggested that it was possible to create better upper respiratory health using through a natural product such as xylitol.
According to the studies, when exposed to xylitol, the bacteria that cause upper respiratory infections lose their ability to adhere to tissues, allowing the body to more easily wash them away.
Building upon the findings of the studies, Dr. Jones developed a xylitol based nasal wash and began to administer it to his granddaughter after every diaper change. Dr. Jones observed her infections ceased.
Following the success of the xylitol based nasal wash on his granddaughter, Dr. Jones had ten other children in his practice use the nasal wash in the same way. Over the next 11 months of regular use of this spray, these ten children experienced a 93% reduction in ear infections.
In 1999 Dr. Jones patented using xylitol in nasal applications and formulated the product that became known as Xlear Nasal Spray.
