WYNR 1390 Radio Chicago

WYNR Radio Station - Chicago was a Chicago, Illinois - area AM radio station operating on the frequency 1390 kHz owned by Gordon McLendon of Dallas, Texas. The station was hosted primarily by black disc jockeys from 1962 thru 1964 when it became America's first 'all-news' radio station, W-NUS. Announcers included Big John Evans, Dick Kemp (The Wild Child), Luckey Cordell, Bruce Brown, Floyd Brown and Yvonne Daniels. The station is now called WGSB and is owned by Clear Channel Communications.
There were complaints to the United States Federal Communications Commission that the station had eliminated foreign-language programming. The FCC held a hearing to investigate the complaints at which some politicians testified.

My favorite station as a kid. A white kid from Oak Park yet! Some of the best music ever came from that little studio in the brownstone on Washington Blvd. My dad drove by the station every day and the highlight for me is when we passed the building at night with all the pretty lights. The transmitter was on the Carbide and Carbon building on Michigan Ave. and if you were lucky, could pick up a signal west of the city limits. Great DJs too!
